If your bucket list includes a trip to the freezing, deep fjords of Norway or Iceland to do battle with a “barn door” Halibut, the PENN Carnage Viking Edition Halibuster is your specialized tool of choice. Here at Gerry’s Fishing, we know that the “Viking Edition” isn’t just a marketing name—it represents a rod tested by the most elite guides in Scandinavia. While the “Solid” version is a brute-force winch, this Halibuster model is designed for the technical angler who needs to feel the difference between a lure bumping a rock and a giant fish “tasting” the bait.
The Halibuster is built using the cutting-edge Powerlux 1000™ resin system. This technology allows the blank to be significantly thinner and lighter while increasing its resistance to breakage. It produces a rod with a dual personality: a highly sensitive tip that can register the subtle “pluck” of a predator at 100 meters, and a terrifying power reserve in the lower sections to pull a 50kg+ fish away from the seafloor.
At 7’3″ (2.21m), this is a longer rod than traditional “stubby” boat rods. This extra length is a strategic advantage for Halibut fishing; it provides a much more forgiving arc that helps absorb the violent, bone-jarring head-shakes these fish are known for. It also gives you more reach to clear the boat’s hull or engine. As a 1-piece rod, it offers a completely uninterrupted power curve, ensuring that there are no weak points or “flat spots” when you are leaning into the fight of your life.
Prime Locations & Uses:
Scandinavian Halibut Expeditions: Specifically engineered to work giant soft plastics (shads) and large dead-baits in deep water.
Deep-Water Wrecking: A superb choice for targeting trophy-sized Ling and Conger where you need sensitivity to time the strike perfectly.
Heavy-Tide Specimen Fishing: Ideal for the Bristol Channel or the North Sea when you are targeting big Rays or Smoothhounds in heavy current.
The “Pro” Standard: Designed for the angler who wants the absolute best in componentry, featuring Fuji SiC guides that are virtually immune to the heat and friction of heavy braided lines.
“The Halibuster is the ‘F1 car’ of the halibut world. That Powerlux 1000™ blank is what makes the difference; it feels like a 20lb rod in the hand, but it hits like an 80lb rod when it’s loaded up. My advice? Since this is a 50lb-class stick with Fuji SiC guides, pair it with a top-tier braid like 60lb–80lb Berkley Whiplash. Because it’s a 1-piece rod at 7’3″, transport is your biggest hurdle. Get yourself a sturdy hard-case rod tube for the flight to Norway—you don’t want to arrive at the fjord with a 2-piece rod you didn’t ask for!”

Q: What is Powerlux 1000™ and why does it matter?
A: Powerlux 1000™ is a nano-resin technology that fills the microscopic gaps between the carbon fibers in the blank. This makes the rod significantly stronger and more resistant to impact and “crushing” forces, allowing PENN to build a rod that is thinner and lighter without sacrificing durability.
Q: Is 7’3″ too long for boat fishing?
A: Not for Halibut. While a 5’6″ rod is better for “winching,” a 7’3″ rod like this allows you to guide the fish more effectively around the boat. The extra length also acts as a better “shock absorber” during the fight, which helps prevent the hook from tearing out of the fish’s mouth.
Q: Can I use a spinning reel with this rod?
A: No. This rod is designed with a Fuji DPS reel seat and guide configuration optimized for multiplier or overhead reels. Using a spinning reel would result in poor line flow and awkward ergonomics.
Q: Why choose Fuji SiC guides?
A: Silicon Carbide (SiC) is one of the hardest materials used in guide construction. They are incredibly smooth and have the highest heat dissipation of any guide material. This is crucial when a “monster” Halibut takes 100 meters of line in a single run, as it prevents your braid from overheating and snapping.
