“At Gerry’s, we’ve seen a huge shift toward spikes because they’re just so much faster when the fishing is ‘thick and fast.’ My top tip for Spike’Ums: Use a fine-gauge bayonet. While the bait is designed to be soft, a thinner spike creates a smaller hole, which means the bait will stay on for even longer—sometimes through 3 or 4 fish! Also, if you’re fishing in very shallow water, try the Fluoro or Chocolate Orange versions. The visual pop combined with the wafting movement is often too much for a curious carp to ignore.”

Q: Do I still need to check them in water?

A: Yes! Always. Different hooks and different spikes have different weights. You want the bait to sink slowly and rest just above the hook shank. If it’s floating too high, move to a slightly heavier hook or add a small shot to the hair.

Q: Can I use these in a bait band?

A: Technically, yes, but the texture is optimized for spiking. If you prefer banding, we recommend the Band’Um Wafter range, as the dumbbell shape is specifically designed to lock into a band.

Q: Will they split if I use a large spike?
