At Gerry’s Fishing, we understand that feeder fishing is a game of stealth and precision. Whether you’re “on the clip” at a commercial lake or ledgering on a slow-moving river, your line needs to do one thing perfectly: stay out of the way. Drennan Carp Feeder Mono is engineered specifically for this purpose. It is a fast-sinking, heavy-duty monofilament that ensures your line hugs the lakebed, preventing those frustrating “line bites” and ensuring that shy-biting carp feel nothing but your bait.
The dark brown tint is a calculated design choice by Drennan. It blends seamlessly with the silt, clay, and gravel found on the bottom of most UK venues, making your terminal setup virtually invisible to fish cruising over your feed. Unlike standard lines that may float or sit in the mid-water, this mono cuts through the surface film quickly, pinning itself down to provide the direct, tight connection required for effective tip-eye bite detection.
Feeder fishing is tough on gear. Constant casting with heavy method feeders and dragging fish over gravel bars or through marginal reeds requires a line that can take a beating. This mono is exceptionally abrasion-resistant, maintaining its structural integrity even after multiple high-intensity sessions. Despite its toughness, it remains remarkably supple, allowing for smooth, accurate casting when you need to hit the same “dinner plate” spot every time.
| Breaking Strain | Diameter (mm) | Recommended Use |
| 5lb | 0.20mm | Light bomb or small cage feeders |
| 6lb | 0.23mm | General commercial feeder work |
| 8lb | 0.26mm | Heavy method feeders and big carp |
| 10lb | 0.29mm | Snaggy swims or targeting specimen fish |
Method Feeder Fishing: The ideal choice for commercial fisheries where you need a line that sinks fast and stays pinned down to avoid spooking fish feeding in the margins or over a shelf.
Straight Bomb & Pellet: Perfect for winter work when you need a subtle, dark-tinted line that won’t flash in clear water.
River Ledgering: Its abrasion resistance makes it a solid choice for targeting Chub and Barbel on small to medium rivers where the line may rub against submerged rocks or roots.
Specimen Hooklengths: In the 8lb and 10lb strains, this mono makes an excellent, stealthy hooklength material for heavy-duty feeder rigs.
“To get the absolute best sinking performance out of this line, don’t just rely on the weight of the feeder. Once you’ve cast out, bury your rod tip a few inches under the surface and give the reel a couple of quick turns. This breaks the surface tension and helps that dark brown mono ‘slice’ through the water. Also, because this is a 100m spool, it’s the perfect size for ‘top-topping’ your reel or loading up a shallow match spool without needing hundreds of yards of backing!”
Is this line better than a clear mono for feeder fishing?
In most cases, yes. Clear lines can sometimes ‘flash’ or catch the light in shallow water. The dark brown tint of the Drennan Carp Feeder Mono absorbs light and mimics the natural debris on the bottom, making it much harder for fish to detect.
Can I use this for float fishing?
We wouldn’t recommend it. This line is designed specifically to sink. If you try to use it for float fishing, it will pull your float out of position and make it very difficult to ‘mend’ your line on the surface. For float work, you should look at the Drennan Carp Float Fish.
Does 100m cover a full reel spool?
It depends on your reel size. For a standard 3000 or 4000 size feeder reel, 100m is often enough for a ‘working’ length if you use old line as backing underneath. It is also the perfect length for loading up small ‘bomb’ reels or for making up heavy-duty feeder links and rigs.
Is it safe to use ‘on the clip’?
Absolutely. Drennan Carp Feeder has a controlled amount of stretch that acts as a shock absorber. When your feeder hits the line clip at the end of a cast, the line ‘gives’ just enough to prevent the feeder from bouncing back, ensuring your bait lands exactly where it should.
