Unlock the ultimate in bankside mobility with the Shimano Catana GX Spinning Telescopic. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that some of the best fishing spots are the hardest to reach—the overgrown river bends, the hidden urban canal corners, or that mountain tarn at the end of a long hike. This 2.10m model is the “short-game” specialist of the Catana GX range, offering an agile, compact setup that doesn’t sacrifice the backbone needed to land a trophy.
Built on a Full Carbon blank, the Catana GX features Shimano’s high-performance Diaflash reinforcement. This cross-wrapped carbon tape in the butt section is a mechanical necessity for high-quality telescopic rods; it provides the structural integrity needed to prevent blank twist (torsion) during the cast and the fight. The result is a moderate-fast action that feels crisp and responsive, allowing you to flick lures between 10g and 30g with the pinpoint accuracy usually reserved for premium two-piece rods.
Fitted with Fuji Stainless Steel K-Type guides and a classic cork split-grip handle, the Catana GX combines a professional aesthetic with elite line management. Whether you’re working a spinner through a stream or jigging a soft plastic along a harbor wall, this rod delivers the sensitivity and control you need in a package that fits inside a standard daypack.

Tight Urban Stalking: The 2.10m (7ft) length is perfect for navigating tight towpaths, fishing under low-hanging trees, or working around moored boats. It gives you the agility to cast in confined spaces where a longer rod would be a liability.
Mountain Streams and Hiking Trips: If you’re heading into remote areas where every gram of gear counts, this rod is your best friend. It collapses down to a fraction of its size, sliding easily into the side pocket of a rucksack.
Kayak and Small Boat Fishing: The shorter length and telescopic design make this an incredible choice for kayak anglers. It’s easy to manage in a small cockpit and can be stowed away instantly when moving between marks.
The “Lunch Break” Session: Because it fits discreetly in a backpack or car boot, it’s the perfect tool for a quick 30-minute session on the way home from work or during a break.
Gerry’s Pro Tip: Finesse fishing with a shorter rod is all about the “feel.” The ergonomic VSS reel seat on the Catana GX is designed to keep your hand in direct contact with the blank. To maximize this, pair the rod with a high-quality 2500-size Shimano reel and thin-diameter braid. Because this 2.10m model is so agile, use it to “pitch” lures into tight gaps rather than relying on a full overhead cast—the Diaflash butt section provides the perfect “pop” for those technical short-range casts.
Does the telescopic design make it less sensitive than a 2-piece rod?
In years past, telescopic rods felt “dead,” but the Catana GX uses modern Full Carbon layups. While a 2-piece rod will always have a slight edge in seamless transition, the Diaflash reinforcement ensures that vibrations from the lure and the fish are transmitted through the joints effectively. You will have no trouble feeling a perch “plucking” at a soft plastic.
Is it strong enough for a decent Pike?
Absolutely. While you wouldn’t use this for massive jerkbaits, the 10-30g rating is the “sweet spot” for standard pike spoons, spinners, and medium crankbaits. The Diaflash reinforcement ensures the rod has plenty of backbone to turn a large fish away from snags.
How do I stop the sections from jamming?
Always extend the rod from the tip section first, gently pulling each joint until it’s snug. Never “flick” the rod open with a whip-like motion, as this can wedge the sections together too tightly to retract. After a session in saltwater or a dusty environment, wipe each section with a damp cloth before collapsing it to prevent grit from scoring the carbon.
Are the “K-Type” guides actually better?
Fuji K-Type guides feature a unique tilted frame designed to shed “wind knots” automatically. This is a massive advantage when using light braided lines in breezy conditions, as it prevents the line from wrapping around the guide frames during a cast.
