Product Details and Uses

Shimano Catana GX Spinning Tele 2.70m 14-40g

For the angler who refuses to let a busy schedule or limited storage get in the way of a quick cast, the Shimano Catana GX Spinning Telescopic is the ultimate stowaway. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that some of the best sessions are the ones you didn’t plan—the hour on the canal after work or the “just in case” rod in the boot during a family holiday. The Catana GX delivers Shimano’s legendary reliability in a format that fits inside a rucksack or a standard suitcase.

This isn’t just a “travel rod”; it’s a performance tool built on a Full Carbon blank. To solve the traditional problem of telescopic rods feeling “floppy” or weak, Shimano has incorporated Diaflash reinforcement in the butt section. This cross-wrapped carbon tape prevents the blank from twisting under heavy load, ensuring that when you’re leaning into a decent pike or zander, the rod maintains its integrity and provides the “grunt” needed to control the fight.

With its 14-40g casting weight, this 2.70m model is the perfect mid-range all-rounder. It features a moderate-fast action that is forgiving enough to prevent hook-pulls but responsive enough to work a wide variety of lures, from spinners and spoons to medium-sized soft plastics.

Where to Use

  • Urban “Street” Fishing: The 2.70m length is perfect for navigating tight city spots, fishing under bridges, or working lures along canal towpaths. Its compact nature means you can hop on a bus or train without carrying a bulky rod tube.

  • Holiday & Travel: If you’re heading abroad or on a family trip, this rod is a non-negotiable addition to your luggage. It’s a proper spinning rod that happens to fit in your bag, making it ideal for exploring unknown lakes or coastal harbors.

  • Small to Mid-Sized Rivers: The 14-40g rating is perfect for targeting pike, perch, and chub in moving water. The Diaflash butt section gives you the confidence to lead fish away from bankside snags or sunken debris.

  • Spontaneous Coastal Spinning: Ideal for a quick session off a pier or breakwater for mackerel, pollack, or school bass. The Fuji K-Type guides are built to withstand the elements and provide excellent line management.

Pro Tip

Gerry’s Pro Tip: The biggest mistake anglers make with telescopic rods is “flicking” them open. To keep your Catana GX in top shape, always extend it section-by-section, starting from the tip section and working down to the butt. Pull each joint until it is snug but not jammed. When you’re done, wipe each section with a dry cloth before collapsing it; this prevents grit and salt from getting trapped inside the joints, which is the number one cause of telescopic rod failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this rod strong enough for Pike?

Absolutely. While it’s not designed for throwing massive 100g jerkbaits, the 14-40g rating is the “sweet spot” for standard pike spoons, spinners, and larger soft plastics. The Diaflash reinforcement ensures you have the pulling power to land double-figure fish.

Can I use braided line with the Catana GX?

Yes. Shimano has fitted this rod with Fuji Stainless Steel K-Type guides. These are specifically designed to handle the friction of modern braids and feature a “tangle-free” design that helps prevent the tip-wraps often caused by light braids in windy conditions.

Does it come with a protective cap?

Yes, it is supplied with a heavy-duty plastic tip protector. Always use this during transport, as the tip section of any telescopic rod is its most delicate point.

What size reel should I pair with the 2.70m model?

For the 14-40g model, a 2500 or 3000 size Shimano reel provides the perfect balance. This keeps the setup lightweight and agile for all-day casting while providing enough line capacity for open-water scenarios.
