“The 656 CTM is a ‘tuner’s dream.’ To get the absolute maximum distance, start your session with the Knobby Mag turned about three-quarters of the way ‘On.’ As the oil in the bearings warms up and you find your casting rhythm, start backing the mag off by one or two clicks per cast. You’ll feel the reel ‘loosen up’ and your lead will carry significantly further. Also, because this is an open-cage reel, make sure you practice your ‘thumbing’ on the retrieve—lay the line evenly back and forth to ensure your next cast is as smooth as the first!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this reel have a level-wind?

No. The CTM is an open-cage (CT) model. This is designed for maximum casting distance as it removes the friction caused by a level-wind mechanism. If you prefer a reel that lays the line for you, look at the Akios 656 CSM models.

Is it difficult for a beginner to use?

Actually, the CTM is one of the best reels to learn on. Because it has dual braking (centrifugal and magnetic), you can set it up to be incredibly ‘safe.’ As your confidence grows, you can reduce the braking to increase your distance. It grows with you as an angler.

How do I maintain the magnetic system?

The ‘Long Mag Knobby’ is a robust mechanical system, but it likes to stay clean. After a salty session, give the external knob a wipe with a damp cloth. Occasionally, remove the side plate and put a tiny drop of light oil on the slider threads to ensure the magnetic carriage moves smoothly back and forth.

Can I use braid on the 656 CTM?

Yes, you can, but we recommend caution. Because it is an open-cage reel, braid can sometimes ‘dig in’ under pressure if not laid perfectly by hand during the retrieve. Most of our customers at Gerry’s prefer a high-quality 15lb to 20lb monofilament for this specific model to get the most consistent casting performance.
