When you are fishing over sand or mud for wary flatfish, presentation is the difference between a motionless rod tip and a blistering take. At Gerry’s Fishing, we recommend the Gerry’s Oval Floating Beads as a vital component for any serious shore or match angler. These aren’t just colorful spacers; they are high-buoyancy tools designed to lift your bait into the “strike zone,” keeping it visible, active, and—most importantly—out of the reach of bait-stealing crabs.
The 0.8mm bore is precision-drilled for lighter snood and hook-length lines, ensuring a snug fit that won’t slide unnecessarily during the cast. Available in high-visibility fluorescent colors, these beads act as a visual dinner bell for sight-feeding predators. By lifting the bait just an inch or two off the seabed, you allow the tide to breathe life into your worm or fish baits, making them look like a natural, moving food source rather than a static lump on the sand.

Plaice and Flounder Matches: These species are notoriously attracted to bright colors. A string of two or three floating beads above a bunch of black lugworm is a classic “Plaice rig” that has won countless competitions.
Crab-Infested Waters: If your baits are being stripped in minutes, adding these beads provides just enough lift to keep your hook above the reach of shore crabs, giving target fish more time to find your bait.
Targeting Whiting and Bream: These species often feed slightly off the seabed. Using a floating bead on a long snood allows the bait to flutter in the current, mimicking the movement of a small prey fish or shrimp.
Low-Light and Murky Water: The fluorescent properties of these beads are essential in colored water or deep gullies, providing a visual “pathway” for fish to follow toward your bait.
The “Bead Spur” Advantage: Our floating beads come supplied on a wired spur. To rig them perfectly, simply thread your snood line through the wire loop and slide the bead onto the line. This prevents the beads from rolling around your tackle box and makes rigging in cold, windy conditions much easier. For maximum lift with larger baits (like a whole ragworm), try using two beads back-to-back!
Will a single bead lift a heavy lead?
No, these beads are designed to lift the hook and bait, not the entire rig. The buoyancy is optimized for light-to-medium baits. If you are using a very large, heavy bait like a whole squid, you may need to step up to a larger float or multiple beads.
Are they legal for match fishing?
Yes, floating beads are a standard and legal component in almost all UK shore and boat fishing matches. They are considered an “attractor” and are a staple tool for match anglers targeting flatfish.
Do I need a stop to keep the bead near the hook?
In most cases, the 0.8mm bore provides enough friction on standard snood lines (around 15lb–25lb) to stay in place. However, if you are using very thin line, a small Gerry’s Micro Crimp or a silicone stop-knot placed 1-2 inches above the hook will keep the bead exactly where you want it.
Can these be used for boat fishing?
Absolutely. They are incredibly effective when drifting for Turbot or Brill, where the movement and lift provided by the bead help the bait “work” across the sandbanks as the boat moves.
