When fishing over rough ground, kelp forests, or jagged reefs, the battle isn’t just with the fish—it’s with the seabed. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that the Pulley Rig is one of the most effective setups ever devised for these environments. Our Gerry’s Pulley Beads are the heart of this system, providing a smooth, low-friction pivot point that allows your rig to function exactly as intended when a fish is hooked.
The magic of the pulley bead lies in its mechanical advantage. During the cast, it holds your rig together; however, once a fish is hooked, the weight of the fish pulls the line through the bead, sliding your lead (sinker) up the line and away from the bottom. This “pulley effect” lifts the lead high into the water column, preventing it from snagging on rocks or weed while you are playing the fish. Whether you are targeting big winter cod or summer rays, these beads are a non-negotiable part of your tackle box.
| Feature | Detail |
| Product Name | Gerry’s Pulley Beads |
| Pack Size | 10 Beads per pack |
| Material | High-density, low-friction impact plastic |
| Design | Smooth internal bore for snag-free line movement |
| Primary Use | Pulley Rigs for rough ground fishing |
| Secondary Use | Running Ledgers for sensitive bite detection |
| Benefit | Lifts lead away from snags during the retrieve |
Rock and Kelp Marks: This is the primary home of the pulley bead. By lifting the lead away from the seabed the moment you start to retrieve a fish, you drastically increase your chances of landing both your prize and your tackle.
Targeting Large Predators: Ideal for species like Cod, Bass, Tope, and Rays. These fish often dive for cover when hooked; the pulley bead ensures the lead doesn’t get caught in the very snags the fish is trying to reach.
High-Impact Casting: Designed to withstand the forces of power casting. These beads sit securely on your shock leader, acting as the primary anchor point for your clipped-down rig.
Running Ledger Setups: For the sensitive angler, these beads act as a perfect “low-resistance” slider. When used on a running ledger, the fish can take line through the bead without feeling the weight of the lead, resulting in more confident bites.
The “Buffer Bead” Essential: For the smoothest operation, always place a Gerry’s 5mm Round Black Rig Bead on either side of the pulley bead on your rig body. This creates a “buffer zone” that protects your knots from the heavy pulley bead during the cast and ensure the line slides through the bead with zero hesitation. For maximum stealth, our black pulley beads blend perfectly into the rig body, making them virtually invisible to wary fish.
How does the pulley bead “lift” the lead?
It’s a simple matter of geometry. When a fish is on the hook, the tension on the line pulls the rig body through the pulley bead. Because the lead is attached to the other end of that rig body, it is hoisted up toward the bead (and your rod tip), keeping it clear of the rocks on the bottom.
Can I use these beads for long-range beach casting?
Absolutely. Pulley rigs are one of the most aerodynamic setups because the lead and bait are “clipped down” together. These beads are built to handle the pressure of 6oz+ leads being cast over 100 yards.
Are they better than using a standard swivel?
A pulley bead is superior to a standard swivel for this specific rig because the rounded, smooth internal channel of the bead is much kinder to your line. A swivel can sometimes “pinch” or “chafe” the line under extreme pressure, whereas the pulley bead allows for a smooth, frictionless glide.
Will they fit over my shock leader knots?
The internal bore is designed to accommodate standard heavy shock leaders (60lb to 80lb). However, always ensure your leader knots are trimmed neatly to ensure the bead can slide freely past them if your rig design requires it.
