Product Details and Uses

Guru Pinger Wire Stem Pole Float

At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that when the wind picks up and the surface of a commercial lake starts to ripple, standard floats can become a liability. If your float is dancing across the surface, your bait is dragging unnaturally on the bottom—and that is a surefire way to spook wary F1s and carp. The Guru Pinger Wire Stem is the “anchor” you need. Designed by the master himself, Mick Wilkinson, this wire-stemmed version of the famous Pinger is built for absolute stability in the toughest conditions.

While the carbon stem Pinger is great for “on the drop” fishing, the wire stem version is all about static presentation. The extra weight of the wire stem helps the float “cock” instantly and stay pinned in position, even when there is a significant “tow” on the water. Built from high-grade, indestructible foam with an extra-long side eye, this float is a heavy-duty workhorse that doesn’t sacrifice the sensitivity required to detect the shyest of bites.

Key Features & Advantages

  • Wire Stem Stability: The stainless steel wire stem acts as a keel, pulling the float upright the moment it hits the water. This is essential for “choppy” conditions where you need the float to remain vertical despite surface wave action.

  • Mick Wilkinson “Indestructible” Build: These floats are built to last. The high-density foam body won’t take on water even if the surface is nicked, and the extra-long side eye is glued deep into the body, ensuring it won’t pull out when you are “hauling” big weights of fish.

  • Rounded Body Profile: The bulbous shape of the Pinger is designed to resist being pushed around by wind or water movement. It “sits” in the water column, providing a rock-solid platform that helps you keep your bait perfectly still on the bottom.

  • Visible Hollow Tip: The 1.5mm hollow plastic tip is the perfect compromise between sensitivity and visibility. It’s buoyant enough to support larger baits like corn or 6mm pellets but fine enough to register the tiny “dips” associated with wary F1s in cold water.

Pro Tip from the Shop

The “Bulk-Down” Strategy: When using the Wire Stem Pinger in windy conditions, we recommend using a “bulk” of shot (No. 8s or No. 9s) placed about 12 to 18 inches from the hook, with one or two “dropper” shots below. The weight of the wire stem combined with a bulked shotting pattern creates a rigid “column” in the water. This prevents the wind from bowing your line and dragging your bait away from the feed zone, keeping you in the “killing zone” for longer.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Deep-Water Commercials: For venues over 5ft deep, the wire stem helps the rig settle quickly and stay stable. It’s the go-to float for “deck” fishing with corn or pellets.

  • High-Wind Match Days: When other anglers are struggling to see their floats or keep their rigs still, the Pinger Wire Stem will sit like a rock. This is often the difference between a few “luck” fish and a match-winning bag.

  • F1 & Silverfish Tactics: Despite its strength, this float is incredibly sensitive. Use the smaller 0.2g or 0.3g sizes for targeting skimmers and F1s on the pole when you need a delicate touch but the stability of a wire keel.

  • Marginal Shelves: On steep slopes, the rounded body prevents the float from “diving” if it drifts slightly. It provides a consistent read of the depth, allowing you to fish with surgical precision.

Internal Link Hooks

Complete your high-stability rig with these recommended items:

  • Guru N-Gauge Monofilament: The perfect line for building durable, high-performance pole rigs.

  • Guru Super XS Eyed Hooks: Strong enough to match the “indestructible” nature of the Pinger float.

  • Guru Plummets: Essential for finding that “spot on the spot” before you start your session.

FAQs

When should I use Wire Stem over Carbon Stem?

Use Wire when you want your bait to stay still on the bottom or when it’s windy. Use Carbon when you want to catch fish “on the drop” as the bait falls through the water. Wire is for stability; Carbon is for a natural fall.

Will the wire stem bend?

While the wire is very durable, it can be bent if mistreated. However, the high-grade stainless steel used by Mick Wilkinson has a great “memory” and can usually be straightened easily by hand if it takes a knock in the net.

Is the side eye strong enough for big carp?

Absolutely. The side eye on the Guru Pinger range is “extra-long” and glued deep into the core of the foam body. It is specifically designed to withstand the pressure of heavy elastics and large commercial carp.

What size should I choose?

A good rule of thumb is 0.1g for every foot of water, but if it’s very windy, don’t be afraid to go one size heavier (e.g., a 0.5g float in 4ft of water) to ensure the rig stays pinned.
