Product Details and Uses

Akios Dynamo 656 CT Multiplier

At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that for many shore anglers, distance is the ultimate currency. When you need to reach that distant sandbar or clear a stubborn shore-break, you need a reel that offers zero interference. The Akios Dynamo 656 CT is built for that exact purpose. Featuring an open “CT” cage design, this reel removes the level-wind mechanism entirely, providing the spool with total freedom and allowing your thumb to have direct, tactile control over every yard of the cast.

The standout feature of the Dynamo is the Dyna Max 6-block dynamic centrifugal braking system. While some reels rely on one or two blocks, the Dynamo gives you a much finer degree of “insurance.” These six blocks provide consistent, reliable braking throughout the casting arc, making it a fantastic choice for those who want to hit maximum distance without the constant fear of a “bird-nest” overrun. Combined with ABEC stainless steel bearings and a free-floating spool, the Dynamo is a high-speed casting machine that punches well above its price point.

Built for Torque and Durability

While it’s a speed demon on the cast, the Dynamo doesn’t compromise on the retrieve. It features tough, precision-machined brass gears with a 5.3:1 ratio, providing the high-torque winding power needed to winch a double-figure Ray or a winter Cod through the surf. The carbon multi-disc drag offers a smooth 17.5lb of pressure, ensuring that when a fish makes a run for it, the line leaves the spool without “stuttering.”

Finished with lightweight anodized aluminium side plates, the reel is designed to keep the overall weight down to just 360g, ensuring your setup remains balanced and responsive, even on the highest-modulus carbon rods.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Long-Distance Beach Casting: The open cage and 6-block braking make this a “born and bred” distance reel for open beaches.

  • Mixed Ground Shore Fishing: The brass gears and 17.5lb drag provide the winching power needed to steer fish through light kelp and over shingle banks.

  • Tournament Practice: For those moving from standard multipliers into the world of “tuned” reels, the Dynamo is an excellent stepping stone for learning power casting.

  • Uptiding from the Boat: While primarily a shore reel, its casting prowess and high torque make it a solid option for casting leads away from the boat in shallow to medium depths.

Gerry’s Pro Tip

“The Dyna Max 6-block system is your best friend when learning to ‘tame’ an open-cage reel. My advice is to start with four of the blocks ‘engaged’ (pushed out). This provides a massive safety net while you’re finding your timing. As you get more confident and want to squeeze out those extra yards, you can drop down to two blocks. Also, because this is a CT reel, always remember to lay your line evenly with your thumb on the retrieve—if the line ‘bunches’ in one spot, it will ruin your next cast!”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of a ‘CT’ cage?

The ‘CT’ stands for ‘Casting’ or ‘Cross-bar’ cage, which means it has no level-wind. By removing the level-wind, you remove the mechanical friction and the ‘drag’ of moving the line guide back and forth. This allows the spool to spin faster and longer, resulting in significantly more distance.

Is this reel suitable for beginners?

Yes, but with a caveat. Because it has no level-wind, you have to guide the line back onto the spool with your thumb. However, the 6-block centrifugal braking system makes it one of the ‘safest’ open-cage reels on the market, meaning you are much less likely to get an overrun compared to other distance reels.

Can I use braid on the Akios Dynamo?

You can, but we generally recommend high-quality 15lb to 18lb monofilament for open-cage casting. Braid has a tendency to ‘dig in’ under pressure if it isn’t laid perfectly, which can cause the spool to snatch during your next cast. If you do use braid, ensure you use a long mono shock leader.

How do I maintain the braking system?

The centrifugal blocks are located under the side plate. After every few sessions, it’s worth a quick wipe with a dry cloth to remove any excess oil or salt. The blocks work on friction, so they need to be clean and dry to perform at their best.
