When you are fishing offshore in heavy tides or deep water, keeping your bait in the strike zone is a major challenge. At Gerry’s Fishing, we’ve developed the Bopedo Leads specifically for the serious boat angler. These weights combine the streamlining of a classic torpedo with the heavy-duty mass required to reach the seabed quickly and stay there.
The Bopedo design is engineered to cut through the water column with minimal resistance, which reduces the “bow” in your line as you drop down to deep-water wrecks or reefs. Available in weights up to 32oz, these leads are built for the most demanding conditions, from the fast-flowing tides of the English Channel to the extreme depths of the Norwegian fjords.
| Feature | Specification |
| Product Type | Heavy-duty Boat Casting/Jigging Lead |
| Shape | Aerodynamic Bopedo / Torpedo |
| Weights Available | 8oz, 12oz, 24oz, and 32oz |
| Attachment | Extra-strong stainless steel tail loop |
| Material | High-density lead for a compact profile |
| Primary Use | Boat fishing, wrecking, and deep-water drifting |
Rapid Descent: The vertical, streamlined profile ensures your rig reaches the bottom as fast as possible. This is critical when you are trying to hit a small wreck on a fast drift.
Reduced Line Drag: Unlike bulky, round weights, the Bopedo’s slim shape minimizes the “pull” of the tide against the lead. This allows you to use a lighter weight than you otherwise would, improving your bite detection.
Stability in the Tide: The concentrated weight at the base of the lead keeps it stable, preventing the rig from spinning or tangling as it descends or sits on the bottom.
Built to Last: Every Bopedo lead features a reinforced, large-diameter stainless steel eyelet that can handle the massive pressures of winching heavy fish and weights from deep water.
The “Deep-Drop” Strategy: When fishing in depths over 100 meters, use the 24oz or 32oz Bopedo to ensure you stay vertical. Keeping your line as straight as possible is the secret to feeling the subtle “knocks” of a Ling or Cod. If you find your line is angling away from the boat at a sharp degree, increase the weight of your Bopedo—this will improve your hook-up rate and prevent you from tangling with other anglers on the boat.
Which weight should I choose for UK wrecking?
For most UK offshore wrecking in the North Sea or Channel, the 12oz is a great all-rounder. However, during big spring tides or when fishing in depths over 200ft, you will often need to step up to the 24oz to maintain contact with the bottom.
Is the tail wire strong enough for big fish?
Absolutely. We have specifically designed the stainless steel loops to be “over-spec.” They are cast deep into the lead core to ensure they won’t pull out, even if your lead becomes temporarily snagged or you are hauling in a “full house” of fish.
Can I use these for trolling?
Yes. The streamlined Bopedo shape makes it an excellent choice for trolling lures or baits at mid-depths, as it creates very little turbulence and won’t cause the bait to spin unnaturally.
Will the 32oz lead damage my rod?
Always ensure your boat rod is rated for the weight you are using. A standard 20-30lb class rod will handle up to 12oz comfortably, but for the 24oz and 32oz versions, we recommend using a 30-50lb class or a dedicated “heavy” boat rod to ensure the blank can support the weight.
