Product Details and Uses

Cox & Rawle 1/0 Up and Over Rig: The Distance Specialist for Big Baits

When you need to present a large bait a long way from the shore without sacrificing presentation, the Cox & Rawle 1/0 Up and Over Rig is the professional choice. At Gerry’s Fishing, we recommend this rig for anglers targeting specimen fish like Bass, Rays, and Cod, where a long, flowing snood is required to fool wary fish in clear water or heavy tides.

The “Up and Over” design is a clever engineering solution for casting long snoods. By looping the snood up to a pulley-style slider at the top of the rig and then back down to a release clip near the lead, you can cast a 3ft to 5ft snood as a single, streamlined unit. This keeps your bait clear of the lead’s “hardware,” reducing drag in the water and providing a much more natural movement that triggers aggressive takes.

Detailed Specifications

Component Specification
Hook Size 1/0 Ultra-sharp Aberdeen
Rig Style Up and Over (Single Hook Distance)
Rig Body High-tensile 60lb+ Monofilament (Shockleader safe)
Snood Material 30lb – 40lb Abrasion-resistant Mono
Hardware Bait release clip and sliding “Up and Over” link
Primary Use Long-range fishing with large baits
Target Species Bass, Cod, Rays, Smoothhound, and Large Whiting

Key Advantages of the Up and Over System

  • Elite Aerodynamics: Even though the snood is long, the hook is clipped right behind the lead during flight. This eliminates the “helicopter” effect, allowing you to hit distances that are impossible with standard flowing traces.

  • Stealth Presentation: Once the rig hits the water and releases, the bait is presented several feet away from the lead. This “stealth” approach is vital on shallow beaches or in clear water where fish might be spooked by the sight or vibration of a heavy weight.

  • Natural Bait Movement: Because the snood is long and “flowing,” your bait (such as a whole squid or mackerel strip) can waft naturally in the current. This lifelike action is often what convinces a specimen Bass to strike.

  • High-End Components: Built by Cox & Rawle, this rig features their legendary ultra-sharp hooks and reliable swivels, ensuring that when that “fish of a lifetime” finally bites, the hardware won’t let you down.

Where to Use the 1/0 Up and Over Rig

  • Surf Beaches: Perfect for casting into the “second gutter” for Bass during a big surf.

  • Estuary Channels: Ideal for letting a bait drift naturally along the edges of deep channels for big Eels or Rays.

  • Clean Ground Marks: Best used over sand or shingle where the long snood can lay flat on the seabed without snagging.

Pro Tip from the Gerry’s Team

The “Bait-Shield” Setup: To ensure your bait survives a high-velocity cast, always use plenty of Bait Elastic. Since the 1/0 Up and Over is a distance rig, the force of the cast can sometimes strip soft baits (like lugworm) off the hook. By wrapping your bait tightly and leaving the hook point clear, you ensure the rig remains aerodynamic and the hook is ready to set the moment a fish takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it differ from a Pulley Rig?

A Pulley Rig is designed for rough ground to lift the lead out of the way; an Up and Over Rig is designed for maximum distance and presentation on cleaner ground. It allows for a much longer snood than a standard pulley, providing a more finessed presentation.

Will the hook release every time?

Yes, provided you don’t “choke” the hook bend with bait. The impact with the water surface pushes the release arm up, instantly freeing the long snood to extend to its full length.

Is 1/0 the right size for Cod?

A 1/0 hook is a fantastic “middle-ground” size. It is perfect for winter Codling and large Whiting, but if you are targeting true “double-figure” Cod with massive baits, you might consider the Pennel version of this rig for extra security.

What weight should I use?

We recommend a 5oz or 6oz Aero-style lead or a Grip lead. The extra weight helps “set” the hook when a fish moves away with the long snood.
