When you are targeting hard-fighting marine predators, the way you present your bait is the difference between a blank and a record-breaking day. At Gerry’s Fishing, we recommend the Cox & Rawle Circle Hook Bridle Rig as the essential setup for any angler serious about live baiting. This pre-tied rig takes the complexity out of the specialized “bridling” technique, providing a streamlined, high-strength solution that prioritizes both bait health and fish welfare.
The core of this rig is the specialized circle hook. Unlike traditional J-hooks, circle hooks are designed to slide to the corner of the fish’s mouth as it turns away, locking into the jaw hinge for a secure hold. When combined with a bridle—which keeps the hook completely external to the bait—you get a presentation that allows your live bait to swim with zero restriction. This “unmasked” hook has a 100% exposure rate, meaning you don’t have to wait for the hook to tear through the bait before it finds a hold in the predator. It is the ultimate system for catch-and-release angling, drastically reducing the risk of deep-hooking.

Shore Fishing for Tope and Rays: If you are casting large baits from the beach or pier, the bridle rig ensures your bait stays streamlined. The circle hook is perfect for shore fishing where you might not always feel the initial “pick up” immediately; the fish effectively hooks itself as it moves off with the bait.
Drifting for Bass: Use this rig when drifting over sandbanks or reefs with live mackerel or pouting. The bridle allows the bait to swim naturally against the current, creating the distress signals that big bass find irresistible.
Wreck Fishing for Large Pollack: When fishing deep-water wrecks, bridling a live bait ensures it stays alive and active in the high-pressure environment of the depths, where a standard hook through the nose might kill the bait too quickly.
Kayak Fishing: For the kayak angler, managing “strikes” can be tricky. The self-setting nature of the circle hook in this rig means you can keep the rod in the holder while you maneuver, knowing the hook will do the work once the line goes tight.
The “Slack Line” Secret: When a fish takes a bait on a circle hook bridle rig, the most important thing is to give it a few seconds of slack line or very light tension. This allows the fish to fully turn and move away. Once the line begins to peel off the reel, simply tighten your drag or slowly wind into the fish. The circle hook is mechanically designed to pivot and find the corner of the jaw—if you strike too hard or too early, you risk pulling the hook right out of the fish’s mouth!
What is the difference between this and the “Extra” Bridle Rig?
The standard Bridle Rig is designed as a versatile, all-around setup for mid-to-large predators like bass, rays, and tope. The “Extra” version typically features a longer or reinforced bridle loop and sometimes heavier gauge hardware, making it more suited for the very largest baits and apex predators like big blue sharks.
Does this rig come with a bait needle?
This pack contains the two pre-tied rigs. To use them effectively, you will need a small baiting needle (available here at Gerry’s) to pull the bridle loop through the bait’s nostrils or eye sockets before securing it to the hook.
Can I use these rigs with dead baits?
Absolutely. While they excel with live bait, bridling a dead mackerel or squid is a fantastic way to ensure the bait doesn’t “fold” or spin in a heavy tide. It keeps the hook point clear and ready for action, regardless of whether the bait is moving on its own.
Is the monofilament tooth-proof?
While the monofilament used is extremely high-quality and abrasion-resistant, it is not “bite-proof” against species with razor-sharp teeth like Porbeagle sharks. For those species, we recommend using this rig in conjunction with a short wire biting trace. For species like Tope or Smoothhound, the heavy-duty mono is usually more than sufficient.
