At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that when you’re targeting the fastest, most aggressive fish in the ocean, “average” gear just won’t cut it. The Daiwa Saltist range has long been a benchmark for durability, and this latest series of Popper and Jigging rods is designed to take the heat of big-game saltwater battles without flinching.
Whether you are launching huge surface lures for GTs in the tropics or vertical jigging for hard-fighting species closer to home, these rods provide the perfect blend of casting distance, lure control, and raw lifting power. Finished in the iconic Saltist blue and silver, they look as good as they perform.
Each rod in this series is built on a high-grade carbon blank designed to handle the sudden, violent bursts of power typical of saltwater predators.
The Popper (8’6”) is all about leverage and distance; the length allows you to work “walk-the-dog” lures and chugging poppers with ease while maintaining the backbone to stop a fish heading for the reef.
The Jigging Models (6’3” & 5’6”) are “power-houses” built for vertical work. They feature a shorter, more powerful blank that acts as a lever, allowing you to move heavy fish from depth with significantly less strain on your back.
Equipped with Fuji O-Ring guides, these rods are built to withstand the abrasive nature of heavy braided lines and the corrosive saltwater environment, ensuring your gear lasts season after season.
| Model | Application | Length | Max Cast/Jig Wgt | Weight | Sections | Guides |
| STT862HS-AZ | Popper/Lure | 8’6” (260cm) | 80g – 140g | 415g | 2 | Fuji O Rings |
| STT632HS-AZ | Light/Med Jig | 6’3” (191cm) | 90g – 210g | 250g | 2 | Fuji O Rings |
| STT562HS-AZ | Heavy Jigging | 5’6” (168cm) | 210g – 300g | 270g | 2 | Fuji O Rings |
Tropical Expeditions (Popping): The 8’6” Saltist is the ultimate tool for chasing Giant Trevally (GTs), Cubera Snapper, or Roosterfish. It has the tip speed to launch a 120g popper into the horizon and the “grunt” to turn a fish away from sharp coral.
UK Bluefin Tuna (Jigging/Spinning): With the recent explosion of Bluefin Tuna in UK waters, these rods offer a reliable entry into the big-game world. Use the 300g jigging model for vertical work or the Popper rod for throwing large stickbaits at surface-feeding tuna.
Norway & Iceland: The 5’6” 300g model is a fantastic “winching” rod for massive Halibut and Coalfish, where you need to apply maximum pressure in deep water.
“When using the Saltist Popper rod, balance is everything. Pair the 8’6″ model with a 10,000 or 14,000 size Daiwa BG or Saltist reel to ensure the rod doesn’t feel ‘tip-heavy’ during a long day of casting. For the jigging rods, remember that the rating (up to 300g) is for vertical jigging. If you try to cast that weight, you’ll likely overstress the blank. Stick to the vertical ‘lift and drop’ and let the rod’s parabolic bend do the work for you—save your back!”
Are these rods suitable for use with multipliers?
No, the Saltist Popper and Jigging range is designed specifically for Spinning (Fixed Spool) reels. The guide orientation and the lack of a trigger grip mean they perform best with a high-quality saltwater spinning reel.
What is the benefit of the Fuji O-Rings?
Fuji O-Rings are incredibly durable and offer excellent value for money. They are designed to handle the high friction and heat generated by braided lines during long, high-speed runs from fish like Tuna or Mahi-Mahi.
Is the 2-piece design strong enough for big fish?
Absolutely. Daiwa uses reinforced joints that maintain the blank’s integrity. The 2-piece construction makes these rods much easier to travel with, especially for destination angling where 1-piece rods can be a nightmare to fly with.
Which model is best for general boat jigging in the UK?
The 6’3” 90-210g is the most versatile “all-rounder” for the UK. It’s perfect for deep-water wrecking for Pollack and Cod but has enough backbone to handle a stray shark or a massive Ling if they show up.
Ready to tackle the giants? The Daiwa Saltist range is in stock and ready to ship. If you need help matching a reel to these rods, give the shop a call!
