Product Details and Uses

Drennan Float Stops – High-Grip Line Protection

Drennan Float Stops are a versatile tackle box essential, prized for their exceptional grip and line-friendly construction. Manufactured from a high-grade, flexible rubber, these stops are designed to be threaded onto your line via a convenient wire loop, providing a secure anchor point that won’t slip under the pressure of casting or when playing a fish.

Unlike traditional split shot, which can pinch and weaken the line, Drennan Float Stops rely on friction and the natural properties of the rubber to stay in place. This makes them the “gold standard” for sensitive setups where maintaining the integrity of the line is critical.

Pro Tip from Gerry’s Fishing

Pro Tip: To ensure maximum grip, always moisten the line with a little water or saliva before sliding the stop from the wire loop onto your reel line. This prevents “heat burn” and allows the stop to bed down perfectly. If you are using a heavy float or casting long distances, try using two stops back-to-back; this doubling up creates a rock-solid lock that even the heaviest wagglers won’t shift.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Waggler Fishing: Use them to “trap” a loaded waggler in place on the line. They allow you to change your depth in seconds without having to move shot or re-tie rigs.

  • Link Ledgering: Perfect for creating a “running” ledger setup. Use a stop as a buffer between your lead link and your hooklink swivel.

  • Slider Rigs: The Small version acts as an excellent secondary stop or buffer bead for slider float setups in deep water.

  • Pike & Carp Rigs: Use the Medium size as a streamlined rubber bead or buffer to protect knots on heavy-duty running rigs or sunker controllers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these better than using lead shot to hold a float?

Yes, significantly. Lead shot can cause “kinking” or nicks in the line, which are weak points. These rubber stops are completely non-abrasive. Additionally, they are much easier to move up and down the line when searching for the fish at different depths.

Which size should I choose?

The Small size is generally preferred for light lines (2lb to 5lb) and finesse float work. The Medium size is the better choice for lines from 6lb upwards, or when using larger floats and leger setups where a more substantial “buffer” is required.

Can I reuse them once they are on the line?

While they are designed to stay on the line until you cut your rig down, you can carefully slide them back onto a spare piece of wire to reuse them. However, for maximum grip on a new rig, we always recommend using a fresh stop.
