When you are fishing over deep-water wrecks or jagged reef structures, the last thing you want to deal with is a tangled rig. At Gerry’s Fishing, we understand that in high-current environments, keeping your baited hook away from your mainline is the key to success. The Gerry’s Anti-Tangle Booms (also known as Wrecking Booms) are designed to do exactly that—providing a physical “arm” that pushes your snood out and away from the lead, ensuring your presentation remains perfect even in the most testing conditions.
Available in both 12-inch and 16-inch sizes, these booms are a staple for boat anglers targeting large predators. The stiff construction ensures the boom doesn’t “fold” under the pressure of a fast-moving tide, while the integrated snap link allows for lightning-fast lead changes when the depth or current fluctuates. By reducing tangles, these booms maximize your “fishing time” and significantly increase your chances of a hook-up.
| Feature | Detail |
| Product Name | Gerrys Anti Tangle Booms (Wrecking Booms) |
| Sizes Available | 12 Inch and 16 Inch |
| Pack Size | 3 Booms per pack |
| Material | Heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant stiff arm |
| Attachment | Integrated snap link for quick-change sinkers |
| Primary Use | Deep-water wrecking, reef fishing, and heavy current baiting |
| Benefit | Prevents hook-length wrapping around the mainline |
Deep-Water Wrecking for Cod and Pollack: When fishing vertically over a wreck in 100ft+ of water, the boom keeps your long flowing trace (often 6ft to 15ft) from tangling with the sinker as it descends.
Reef Fishing for Conger Eel: Use the 16-inch version for heavy-duty conger rigs. The extra length provides a wider “stand-off” from the main line, ensuring your large bait stays exactly where it needs to be on the seabed.
Drifting for Bass: These booms are excellent for drifting over sandbanks or reefs. They help your lure or live bait swim naturally without spinning around the mainline, which is a common cause of missed bites.
Fast-Flowing Estuaries: In areas with extreme tidal movement, a boom is essential for preventing “helicoptering” of the rig, ensuring your bait stays pinned to the floor in the strike zone.
The “Bead Buffer” Setup: To ensure your boom works at maximum efficiency, always place a Gerry’s 5mm Round Black Rig Bead on either side of the boom’s swivel on your rig body. This prevents the boom from sliding over your knots and provides a smooth rotation. For very long traces, we recommend the 16-inch boom—the longer the arm, the further your bait is pushed away from the “danger zone” of the mainline.
Which size should I choose: 12″ or 16″?
This depends on your trace length. For shorter snoods (under 4ft), the 12-inch boom is usually sufficient and offers a more compact setup. For longer, “flowing” traces used for pollack or bass, the 16-inch boom provides the extra clearance required to prevent tangles during the descent.
Can these be used for shore fishing?
While primarily a boat fishing tool, these booms can be used for “heavy” shore ledgering from piers or deep-water rock marks where casting distance isn’t the primary concern. They are not recommended for long-range beach casting due to their aerodynamic profile.
Are the snap links strong enough for heavy leads?
Yes. The clips integrated into our wrecking booms are selected for their strength, capable of holding the 1lb to 2lb leads often required when fishing deep offshore marks in heavy tides.
Will they rust in saltwater?
Our booms are constructed from high-quality, saltwater-resistant materials. However, to maintain the smooth rotation of the swivel and the integrity of the snap link, we always recommend a quick rinse in fresh water after a day at sea.
