Gerry’s Rig Springs are a specific type of terminal tackle component used in sea fishing, particularly in distance casting rigs.

They are small, stainless steel coiled springs that serve a crucial purpose in a rig, often referred to as SRT (Shock Release Tension) Springs.

Function and Purpose:

Absorb Casting Shock: When an angler performs a powerful overhead cast (a “power cast”), the force can cause the monofilament line to stretch momentarily. This stretch can pull the hook out of the bait clip (or impact shield) before it hits the water, resulting in a tangle, known as “crabbing.”
Maintain Clip Tension: The spring is placed onto the main rig body, often above the top swivel or a run of crimps. It provides tension to compensate for line stretch, ensuring the bait hook remains securely clipped down to the impact release mechanism throughout the casting motion.
Prevent Tangles: By absorbing the shock and maintaining the rig’s streamlined, clipped-down shape, the spring helps prevent the rig from flying apart prematurely, which is essential for achieving maximum casting distance without tangles.
