HTO Slow Jig – 200g – 130mm

Product Details and Uses

The HTO Slow Jig is a powerhouse vertical lure designed for deep-water wrecking and reef fishing. In the world of modern sea angling, “Slow Jigging” has revolutionized how we target bottom-dwelling predators. This 200g model is the heavy-hitter of the range, featuring a flat, bullet-shaped profile that ensures an ultra-fast descent. This is crucial when you are drifting over a specific piece of structure or a deep-water wreck in high-flow tides; you need to reach the “kill zone” quickly before the boat moves off the target.

Despite its fast-sinking nature, the true magic happens when you work the lure. Unlike traditional high-speed jigs, this should be worked with slow, rhythmic lifts of the rod. The slightly contoured body and holographic patterns create a frantic “flutter” and intense flashing on the fall, mimicking a wounded baitfish. It is a method that has proven to be incredibly effective, with this jig alone responsible for catching over 40 species in UK waters, from specimen Cod and Bass to colourful Gurnards and Wrasse.

Why the HTO 200g Slow Jig is a Deep-Water Essential

  • Rapid Descent: The 200g aerodynamic bullet shape cuts through the water column, allowing you to hit the bottom even in deep water or during a “ripping” tide.

  • Species Magnet: Proven to catch a massive variety of UK species—if it swims near the bottom, it will hit this jig!

  • High-Impact Visuals: Deep-etched holographic patterns reflect every available bit of light, providing a beacon for predators in the dark depths of a wreck.

  • Contoured Flutter Action: The asymmetrical body design ensures the jig doesn’t just fall—it vibrates and flutters, triggering aggressive “reaction” strikes.

  • Durable Construction: Built to withstand the punishment of rocky sea beds and the powerful jaws of large predatory fish.

Detailed Specifications

Examples of Where to Use the 200g Slow Jig

  • Deep Water Wrecking: The 200g weight is perfect for fishing wrecks in 150ft+ of water where you need to stay as vertical as possible to avoid snagging the structure.

  • Offshore Reefs: Ideal for “Slow Pitch” jigging over varied ground for Pollack and Bass. The slow flutter on the fall is often much more effective than a fast retrieve.

  • High-Flow Tides: When the current makes lighter 100g or 150g jigs move too fast, the 200g model anchors your presentation in the strike zone.

Gerry’s Fishing Pro Tip

The biggest mistake anglers make with slow jigs is over-working them. Here at Gerry’s, we recommend a “Long Fall” technique: Lift the rod slowly to about 11 o’clock, then drop the rod tip faster than the jig can fall. This creates slack line, which allows the jig to tip over and “flutter” horizontally—this is exactly when 90% of the bites will occur. Note: These jigs are supplied without hooks. We highly recommend rigging them with a pair of HTO Assist Hooks at the top eye to maximize your hook-up rate and reduce snags on the bottom!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Why do I need such a heavy jig? In the UK, we often deal with deep water and strong tides. A 200g jig ensures your line stays vertical. If your line is at a 45-degree angle because the jig is too light, you lose all control over the action and the ability to feel bites.

  • Does it come with hooks? No, most specialized slow jigs are sold “bare” so you can choose the size and length of Assist Hook that suits your target species. We stock a full range of HTO Assist Hooks to match!

  • What rod should I use? For a 200g jig, you really need a dedicated Slow Jigging rod. These have a very specific “parabolic” action that “loads” and “flicks” the jig for you, doing all the hard work so you don’t have to.

  • Can I use this for Mackerel? You certainly can, though a 200g jig is a bit of “overkill” for standard Mackerel. However, you’ll be surprised how many larger fish will hit this while you are fishing for the smaller stuff
