Product Details and Uses

Korda Mouthtrap Stiff Filament

At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that the secret to a devastating Chod or Hinged Stiff rig lies in the “memory” of your hooklink. If your material doesn’t hold its shape, the rig won’t reset, and you won’t get those rock-solid hook holds. Korda Mouthtrap was engineered to be the ultimate solution to this problem. It is arguably the most user-friendly stiff filament ever developed, designed to give you perfect rig mechanics without the constant need for a boiling kettle.

What sets Mouthtrap apart is its unique chemical make-up. It is incredibly easy to manipulate using just your fingers, yet it possesses a high-memory finish that allows it to retain a perfect, aggressive curve. Finished in a natural “carpy” tint, it vanishes against the lake bed, ensuring that your presentation is as stealthy as it is effective.

Key Features & Performance

  • Kettle-Free Manipulation: Unlike older stiff materials that required steaming to hold a shape, Mouthtrap can be curved or straightened simply by using the heat and pressure from your thumb and fingers.

  • High Memory Retention: Once you’ve formed that “Choddy curve,” Mouthtrap stays that way. This is vital for ensuring your rig “resets” itself if a fish samples it and blows it out.

  • Superior Camouflage: The subtle tint is designed to blend into almost any underwater environment, from silty bottoms to weedy patches, keeping your terminal tackle hidden from wary, pressured carp.

  • Optimized Stiffness: It is stiff enough to prevent tangles on the cast and provide an “anti-eject” property, but just flexible enough to be knotted reliably using a standard Blood Knot or a Chod-loop.

  • High Abrasion Resistance: Built to withstand the rigours of fishing over gravel bars and through thick weed.

Technical Specifications

Breaking Strain Diameter (approx) Primary Application
15lb 0.43mm Finesse Chod rigs and small pop-ups (12mm)
20lb 0.47mm The “All-Rounder” for Chods and Hinged Stiff rigs
25lb 0.53mm Extreme conditions, heavy weed, and large pop-ups (15mm+)

Examples of Where to Use

  • The Classic Chod Rig: This is the bread and butter for Mouthtrap. Its ability to hold a gentle curve ensures the hook sits at the perfect aggressive angle to prick the fish’s bottom lip the moment it is sucked in.

  • Hinged Stiff Rigs: Use Mouthtrap for the “hook” section of the rig. It provides the rigid, upright presentation needed to keep your pop-up sitting proud of the bottom debris.

  • Stiff Booms: While primarily for hook sections, the 25lb version makes an excellent, ultra-stiff boom for various combi-rigs, helping to push the hooklink away from the lead and prevent tangles.

  • D-Rig Presentations: Mouthtrap is perfect for creating the “D” on the back of a hook shank, providing a semi-rigid loop that allows the bait to slide and reset perfectly.

Gerry’s Pro Tip

The Thumb-Curve Technique:

You really don’t need a kettle with this stuff! To get the perfect curve for a Chod rig, take your tied hooklink and run it firmly over the back of your thumb while applying pressure with your other hand. Do this a few times to generate a little bit of friction heat, and the Mouthtrap will take on a smooth, permanent curve. If you want to straighten it back out, just give it a firm, steady pull between two rig tools. It’s that simple!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mouthtrap better than Fluorocarbon?

For stiff rigs like Chods, yes. Standard fluorocarbon can be brittle and often “cracks” when knotted or kinked. Mouthtrap is a dedicated filament designed specifically for “memory,” making it much easier to work with and far more reliable when creating aggressive curves.

What is the best knot for Mouthtrap?

We highly recommend the non-slip loop knot or a standard Blood Knot. Because it is a stiff material, ensure you lubricate the knot thoroughly with saliva before pulling it tight to prevent friction damage to the line.

Does the color change underwater?

The “carpy tint” is designed to be translucent. It doesn’t just “stay green”; it picks up the ambient light and colors of its surroundings, helping it to disappear whether you are fishing over silt, clay, or gravel.

Which breaking strain should I choose?

The 20lb version is the most popular choice for 90% of UK angling. If you are fishing ultra-clear, snag-free waters with small baits, drop to the 15lb. If you are targeting monster fish or fishing in heavy snags/weed, the 25lb provides that extra peace of mind.
