Welcome to Gerry’s Fishing. When it comes to LRF (Light Rock Fishing) and finesse applications, the Magbite Koakuma Jighead is widely considered a staple of the Japanese “Light Game” arsenal. Engineered for the angler who demands high hook-up ratios and precision control, this jig head is specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with micro-plastics to target everything from harbour-dwelling Blennies and Gobies to predatory Wrasse and Pollack.
The “Koakuma” (meaning “Little Devil” in Japanese) is aptly named for its ability to secure strikes that other hooks might miss. Its geometry is optimized to keep your soft plastic sitting perfectly horizontal, ensuring the most natural presentation possible.
Brand: Magbite
Model: Koakuma
Hook Design: Wide-gape for improved hook-up ratio
Material: High-carbon steel with a premium anti-corrosion coating
Design: Perfectly balanced head for a stable, horizontal fall
Application: Ideal for LRF, micro-plastics (1″ to 3″), and finesse presentations
Durability: Ultra-sharp, rust-resistant finish for long-term saltwater performance
The Koakuma Jighead stands out from the crowd due to its refined Japanese engineering:
Wide-Gape Performance: The wider gap between the hook point and the shank significantly increases your chances of a solid hook-set, even when fish are “nipping” at the tail of your lure rather than inhaling it fully.
Stable Presentation: The head shape is designed to provide just enough resistance to keep the lure swimming in a straight, stable line. Whether you are using a slow-crawl or a “lift-and-fall” technique, the Koakuma ensures your soft plastic doesn’t spin or tumble unnaturally.
Superior Sharpness: The hook point is chemically sharpened and incredibly fine. You will notice that you don’t need to “strike” hard to set the hook—a simple, light tension of the line is often all that is required, which is vital when fishing with ultra-light braid and fluorocarbon leaders.
💡 Pro Tip
The “Rigging” Secret. To get the absolute best out of the Koakuma, thread your soft plastic straight onto the hook shank until the lure body fits snugly against the jig head collar. If you are fishing in areas with small, sharp-toothed fish (like mini-Wrasse), add a tiny drop of superglue to the collar before sliding the plastic up. This prevents the lure from sliding down the hook, allowing you to catch dozens of fish without having to re-adjust your bait after every cast.
What size jig head weight should I start with?
For most harbour and rock-wall LRF sessions, start with a 1.0g or 1.5g head. These provide the perfect balance of “feel” and natural sink rate. If you are targeting fish in deeper water or dealing with a strong tide, move up to 2.0g or 2.5g. For “dead-sticking” or fishing in very calm, shallow pools, drop down to 0.5g or 0.8g for the most natural fall.
Is it suitable for soft plastics from other brands?
Yes, the Koakuma is a highly versatile jig head. While it is designed to pair perfectly with Magbite lures, its shank length and collar are optimized to fit almost any micro-plastic, from paddle-tail shads to curly-tail grubs and straight-tail worms.
How should I store these to prevent rust?
Even with a premium anti-corrosion coating, saltwater is incredibly harsh. After your session, always rinse your used jig heads in fresh water and let them air-dry completely before putting them back into your tackle box. We recommend using a dedicated jig-head box with a rubber seal to keep moisture out and keep your hooks sharp and rust-free for the long term.
