Product Details and Uses

Preston Innovations Edge Pole Float – Heavy-Duty Margin & Snag Pattern

When targetting double-figure commercial carp and powerful F1 hybrids right in the margins or tight against heavy island snags, standard pole floats will simply shatter under the immense strain. The Preston Innovations Edge Pole Float is a purpose-built, heavy-duty pattern engineered specifically to cope with the absolute brutality of down-the-edge bag-up sessions.

Constructed from a virtually indestructible, high-density foam body, the Edge features an ultra-robust inline line routing system. By feeding your mainline directly through the internal structural core of the float rather than a vulnerable side-eyelet, the immense torque generated when a hooked fish bolts is distributed evenly down its spine. This completely eliminates the risk of the line ripping out of the float body. Paired with a thick 2.4mm high-visibility hollow plastic bristle and a heavy-duty fiberglass stem, this float is designed to offer maximum stability in shallow water while supporting large, heavy commercial baits.

Technical Specifications

  • Line Management: 100% Inline routing design to prevent body rip-outs and line wrap

  • Tip Diameter: Extra-thick 2.4mm hollow plastic sight bristle (highly visible against dark bankside reflections)

  • Stem Material: Heavy-duty, high-stability fiberglass stem running entirely through the core

  • Body Construction: Premium, crush-resistant high-density foam

  • Target Species: Specimen Commercial Carp, F1 Hybrids, and Heavy Tench

  • Application: Shallow margin fishing, inner shelf lines, and tight snag/reed-line presentation

Where & How to Use the Preston Edge Float

  • Late-Summer Margin Bagging: The ultimate choice for the final hours of a match or session when big carp back right up into the shallow margins ($1\text{ft} – 3\text{ft}$ deep) to graze on heavy loose feed.

  • Island and Reed-Line Stalking: Perfect for tight-line cupping right against far-bank reeds, overhanging willows, or wooden piling planks where large fish feed confidently in high-security zones.

  • Heavy Structural Presentation: Designed explicitly to handle massive, high-gravity baits such as large cubes of luncheon meat, multiple dead maggots, big worms, or whole pieces of sweetcorn without pulling the bristle under.

Pro Tip from the Gerry’s Fishing Team

Margin fishing in the edge often means dealing with heavy water displacement and false indications caused by large carp swimming over your line or rubbing their bodies against the rig (line bites). To combat this and ensure every dip is a genuine bite, you need to pin your rig down hard using a positive, grouped shotting pattern.

Because the Edge float is incredibly stable, try using a tight bulk shotting pattern placed roughly $4\text{in} – 6\text{in}$ away from your hooklength knot, leaving no droppers below it. This ensures that when a big carp inhales your bait, it immediately lifts or pulls against the main weight of the bulk, registerering an instant, undeniable wrap-round bite. Additionally, keep your pole tip positioned directly over the float tip with minimal slack line—when a carp hits you in the edge, they hit hard, and the inline body ensures your rig stands up to that initial, violent impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the bristle so thick at 2.4mm?

The 2.4mm hollow plastic bristle serves two vital purposes. First, it offers incredible upward buoyancy, allowing it to support massive, heavy baits like a large piece of meat or double corn without dipping under. Second, because it is hollow, light shines through it rather than just reflecting off it, making it exceptionally visible even when fished right under dark, overhanging bankside bushes or reeds.

Is the fiberglass stem better than a wire stem for margin fishing?

Yes. While wire stems are excellent for deep-water stability, they can easily bend and kink permanently when a large carp thrashes in a landing net or weed bed. Fiberglass offers the perfect blend of structural weight and flexibility; it flexes completely under load and springs back perfectly straight every single time, making it far more durable for high-impact margin work.

What sizes is the Edge float available in?

Preston rolls these out in dedicated heavy-tackle weights, typically ranging from $0.1\text{g}$ up to $0.4\text{g}$ or $0.5\text{g}$. The lighter models are perfect for ultra-shallow water ($12\text{in} – 18\text{in}$), while the heavier sizes are ideal for cutting through surface ripples or handling deep, undercut margins down the edge.

Can I use this float for traditional open-water silverfish fishing?

While you can technically use it, the Edge is heavily optimized for large fish and big baits. The thick 2.4mm bristle and inline body lack the ultra-refined finesse needed to register delicate, finicky bites from small roach, skimmers, or winter silverfish. For that style of fishing, look toward a finer bristle pattern like the Preston Tyson or Chianti ranges.
