Fishing with paste is one of the most devastatingly effective methods for targeting large weights of carp and F1 hybrids on modern commercial fisheries. However, because paste naturally breaks down and washes off the hook in the water, using a standard float can lead to missed indications and striking at empty hooks. The Preston Innovations Paste Float range is a highly specialized, ultra-robust collection of pole floats specifically engineered to tackle the unique mechanical challenges of paste fishing.
Constructed from high-density, virtually indestructible foam, these floats feature a highly technical inline line routing system combined with an extra-long, high-visibility fiberglass bristle. The inline configuration routes your mainline directly through the center of the float body, distributing the immense pressure evenly and preventing the line from ripping out of the side under the savage bolt-bites typical of commercial carp. The elongated, thick bristle is the core engine of the float: it is designed to support the heavy weight of a large ball of paste, allowing you to accurately gauge exactly when your bait has broken down or been intercepted by a feeding fish.
Line Management: Full Inline routing design to prevent body damage and line tangles
Body Material: High-density, crush-resistant foam construction
Bristle Type: Extra-long, thick, high-visibility fiberglass sight bristle
Stem Material: Heavy-duty, stable fiberglass stem running entirely through the body
Target Species: Commercial Carp, F1 Hybrids, and Specimen Tench
Application: Dedicated pole fishing with soft, high-leakage fishmeal pastes
Warm-Weather Margin Cracking: The ultimate tool for late spring and summer sessions when big carp back into the shallow margins. Dropping a heavy ball of paste right against the bankside reeds or pallets using this float is a lethal tactic.
Mid-Pool Deeper Presentation: Highly effective when fished at the bottom of the far shelf or down the track on a pole line ($4\text{ft} – 6\text{ft}$ deep), where a large, melting bed of paste draws roaming shoals into a feeding frenzy.
Heavy Bait Presentation: Designed explicitly to handle massive, soft hookbaits that would instantly sink or pull under a standard fine-bristled match float.
Pro Tip from the Gerry’s Fishing Team
Reading your float bristle is everything when it comes to paste fishing, and this float makes it incredibly easy once your shotting is dialed in. When plumbing up, you want to set your depth so that your hook sits completely flat on the bottom, with the float set slightly over-depth (usually by $2\text{in} – 4\text{in}$).
When you ship out and ship down, do not add heavy bulk shot to sink the float. Instead, let the weight of the raw paste ball do the work. When the paste sits on the deck, it will pull the long fiberglass bristle down until only the top $5\text{mm} – 10\text{mm}$ tip is visible.
As the paste slowly melts away or is nibbled by silverfish, the float will slowly and steadily rise out of the water, showing more and more bristle. If the bristle rises completely up, you know your hook is bare and it’s time to ship back and re-bait. However, if the bristle violently vanishes in a split second—hold on tight, because a carp has sucked the entire ball in!
Why is the bristle so long compared to a standard carp float?
The extra length and thickness of the fiberglass bristle provide vital upward buoyancy and tracking. Because paste is heavy, a standard short bristle would be pulled completely underwater instantly. The long bristle allows you to see the exact state of your bait as it dissolves on the lake bed, giving you total control over your presentation.
Does this float require a traditional shotting pattern?
No. Paste fishing requires a very minimalist shotting layout. Because the paste ball acts as your main weight, you generally only need a couple of small No.10 or No.11 locking shot placed directly under the float base to keep it upright, or a tiny dropper shot near the hooklength to keep the line pinned straight.
Can I use this float with other heavy baits like large meat cubes?
Yes, absolutely. While it is custom-tailored for paste work, its high-buoyancy, stable fiberglass stem, and thick bristle make it a fantastic cross-over choice for presenting massive cubes of luncheon meat, large bunches of worms, or double-coned expander pellets in the margins.
How does the inline system protect the float body?
When a hooked commercial carp bolts into heavy lilies or reeds, a traditional side-eye wire will twist and rip straight out of the foam body under pressure, ruining the float. The inline system runs the line directly through a tough central plastic tube inside the core, meaning the force is pulled along the spine of the float, making it virtually impossible to break.
