Product Details and Uses

They are essentially a swivel encapsulated within a wide, durable plastic bead.

Primary Purpose: The Pulley Rig

The main and most famous use for Sakuma Pulley Beads is in building the Pulley Rig, which is one of the most widely used and effective sea fishing rigs, particularly for rough or rocky ground.

How it Works in a Pulley Rig:

  1. The Running Point: The main line from the reel runs through the eye of the swivel inside the bead. The hook length (snood) is attached to the other eye of the swivel.
  2. Pressure Distribution: The wide plastic body of the bead is crucial. When casting heavy leads, it helps to spread the pressure of the impact knot (connecting your leader to the rig body) over a larger area of the main rig body line. This significantly reduces the risk of the knot weakening or the line parting during a powerful cast.
  3. The Pulley Action: When a fish is hooked, the weight of the fish pulls on the hook length, which runs through the pulley bead. This action pulls the lead weight up off the seabed and away from snags, hence the name “pulley” rig.

Other Uses

Because they are strong, smooth, and reliable, Sakuma Pulley Beads also have a multitude of other applications for both boat and shore anglers:

  • Running Paternoster Rigs: They can be used to create a free-running boom or hook length connection on a paternoster rig.
  • Portland Rigs: They are often used as a sliding component on this type of rig, allowing the bait to move with the current while the main line is anchored.
  • Fish Finder Rigs: The bead allows the hook length to slide freely up and down the main line or leader, which is essential for these types of rigs.

Key Features

  • Strong and Reliable: Designed to handle the shock of powerful casting and the strain of fighting large fish.
  • Smooth Swivel: The encapsulated swivel ensures the rig components turn freely, minimizing line twist.
  • Durable Bead: The wide plastic housing protects the knot and ensures smooth running on the rig body.
  • Packaging: Typically sold in packs of 10.

In essence, the Sakuma Pulley Bead is an indispensable piece of terminal tackle for any serious sea angler who ties their own rigs, particularly for targeting larger species like Cod, Bass, and Ray over snags.
