French boom are the original “gilling” boom and they are still a good way to make an economic and tangle free flying collar rig. This is a popular rig for drift fishing with shads and sidewinders over wrecks and rock pinnacles.
The French Boom helps to keep the trace line clear of the mainline when dropping the rig through the water reducing the risk of tangles when using long traces It then gives you a very good presentation of your lure
The design allows you to fasten the boom onto the rig line by just twisting the line and allowing the central ‘loop’ to lock it in place. Most people however prefer to simply tie the main line to the top of the boom and then a weaker length of rotten bottom line between the boom and the sinker.
