Product Details and Uses

Shimano Catana GX Spinning Tele 2.10m 7-21g

Master the art of finesse on the move with the Shimano Catana GX Spinning Telescopic 2.10m. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that the most productive spots are often the hardest to access—tight canal corners, overgrown river banks, or remote mountain streams. This 2.10m (7ft) model is the light-tackle specialist of the range, offering a refined 7-21g casting weight that is perfect for technical lure fishing where precision and portability are paramount.

Built on a Full Carbon blank, the Catana GX features Shimano’s high-performance Diaflash reinforcement. This cross-wrapped carbon tape in the butt section is a mechanical necessity for high-quality telescopic rods; it provides the structural integrity needed to prevent blank twist (torsion) during the cast and the fight. The result is a moderate-fast action that feels crisp and responsive, allowing you to flick light lures with the accuracy usually reserved for premium two-piece rods.

Fitted with Fuji Stainless Steel K-Type guides and a classic cork split-grip handle, the Catana GX combines a professional aesthetic with elite line management. Whether you’re working a small spinner through a stream or drop-shotting for perch along a harbor wall, this rod delivers the sensitivity and control you need in a package that fits inside a standard daypack.

Where to Use

  • Urban Perch & Zander Stalking: The 7ft length and 7-21g rating are perfect for finesse urban tactics. Use it to work small jigs, creature baits, or dropshot rigs under bridges and between moored boats where space is at a premium.

  • Remote Mountain Streams: If you’re hiking into the hills for wild trout, weight and space are everything. This rod disappears into your gear but has the sensitivity required to enjoy the fight of a wild fish in a fast-flowing current.

  • Light Rock Fishing (LRF): Ideal for targeting species like pollack, wrasse, and mackerel from harbor walls. The Fuji K-Type guides are built to handle the corrosive sea spray and the friction of modern thin-diameter braids.

  • The “Spontaneous” Session: Because it fits discreetly in a backpack or car boot, it’s the perfect tool for a quick session during a lunch break or on the way home from work.

Pro Tip

Gerry’s Pro Tip: Finesse fishing is all about “feel,” and the ergonomic VSS reel seat on the Catana GX is designed to keep your hand in direct contact with the blank. To maximize this sensitivity, pair the rod with a 1000 or 2000 size Shimano reel and a high-quality 8-strand braid. Because this 7-21g model is so light and agile, it excels at “underarm” and “flick” casts—use the rod’s tip speed to pop lures into tight gaps rather than relying on a heavy overhead swing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the telescopic design make it less sensitive?

In years past, telescopic rods felt “dead,” but the Catana GX uses modern Full Carbon layups and Diaflash tech. While a 2-piece rod will always have a slight edge, this rod transmits vibrations from the lure and the fish effectively through the joints. You will have no trouble feeling a perch “plucking” at a soft plastic.

Is it strong enough for a “bonus” Pike?

While it is a medium-light finesse rod, the Diaflash butt section provides surprising pulling power. If you hook a decent pike while perch fishing, the moderate-fast action will cushion the lunges, allowing the blank to do the work and protect your light hooklength.

How do I stop the sections from jamming?

Always extend the rod from the tip section first, gently pulling each joint until it’s snug. Never “flick” the rod open, as this can wedge the sections together too tightly to retract. After a session in saltwater or a dusty environment, wipe each section with a damp cloth before collapsing it to prevent grit from scoring the carbon.

What is the benefit of the “K-Type” guides?

Fuji K-Type guides feature a unique tilted frame designed to shed “wind knots” automatically. This is a massive advantage when using light braided lines in breezy conditions, as it prevents the line from wrapping around the guide frames during a cast.
