Product Details and Uses

Shimano Catana GX Spinning Tele 3.00m 14-40g

For the angler who refuses to let a busy schedule get in the way of a quick cast, the Shimano Catana GX Spinning Telescopic is the ultimate “grab-and-go” tool. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that some of the best sessions happen unexpectedly. Whether you’re commuting through the city and spot a fishable canal, or you’re heading on a family holiday and need a rod that disappears into a suitcase, the Catana GX delivers Shimano’s legendary reliability in a highly portable format.

Don’t let the telescopic construction fool you into thinking this is a “toy.” Built on a Full Carbon blank and enhanced with Shimano’s Diaflash reinforcement, this rod is surprisingly crisp. The Diaflash technology consists of a cross-wrapped carbon tape in the butt section that prevents the blank from twisting under pressure. This translates to better casting accuracy and significantly more pulling power when you’re trying to turn a stubborn pike or perch away from sunken shopping trolleys or river snags.

Fitted with Fuji Stainless Steel K-Type guides and a classic cork handle, the Catana GX looks and feels like a premium spinning rod. Its moderate-fast action is incredibly versatile, making it the perfect all-rounder for the modern mobile lure angler.

Where to Use

  • Urban Predator Stalking: The 3.00m length gives you the reach needed to fish over canal towpath railings or high stone walls. It’s perfect for working jigs, cranks, and spinners for perch, zander, and pike in city environments.

  • Backpack Traveling: Because it collapses down to a fraction of its length, this rod is a dream for hikers or cyclists. Simply strap it to your bag and you’re ready to explore remote lakes or mountain streams.

  • Spontaneous Coastal Sessions: The 14-40g rating is ideal for light salt-water work. Use it off piers or harbor walls for mackerel, pollack, or bass when you only have an hour to spare.

  • Public Transport Commuting: No more awkward looks on the bus or train with a 6ft rod tube. This rod fits discreetly in a standard rucksack, ensuring your “after-work” session stays your secret.

Pro Tip

Gerry’s Pro Tip: When extending any telescopic rod, always start from the tip section and work your way down to the butt. Pull each section until it is snug, but do not “jam” them together with excessive force. If a section does get stuck, don’t use pliers! A trick we use at Gerry’s is to apply a little ice to the inner section and warmth to the outer section—the slight expansion and contraction usually pop the joint free. Also, always keep the protective plastic tip cap on when not in use; the tip is the most delicate part of a travel rod!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the action compare to a traditional 2-piece rod?

Shimano has worked hard to ensure the Catana GX maintains a “true” moderate-fast action. While a 2-piece rod will always be slightly more “seamless,” the Diaflash reinforcement prevents the “dead spots” often found in cheaper telescopic rods, giving you excellent lure control and fish-playing cushion.

Can I use braid with this rod?

Absolutely. The Fuji K-Type guides are high-quality and designed specifically to handle the friction of modern braided lines. They also feature a “tangle-free” frame design that helps prevent those annoying tip-wraps when fishing in windy conditions.

What size reel should I use with the 3.00m model?

The 3.00m length and 14-40g rating are perfectly balanced by a 2500 or 3000 size Shimano reel. This setup keeps the rod light in the hand for all-day casting while providing enough line capacity for open-water scenarios.

Is 14-40g enough for Pike?

Yes, it is perfect for “standard” pike lures like medium-sized spoons, spinners, and soft plastics. While you wouldn’t use it for giant 100g jerkbaits, it has more than enough backbone to land double-figure pike, especially with the added strength of the Diaflash butt section.
