The Sunset RS Competition Special Surface is a highly specialized rig designed for the “upper layers.” When the sun is high or the tide is pushing baitfish toward the surface, traditional bottom rigs will often go untouched. This rig is engineered to target the acrobatic and fast-moving species that patrol the top of the water column.

At Gerry’s Fishing, we find this rig indispensable for summer match fishing or when Garfish and Mackerel are in the area. The key to its success is the ultra-long 200cm fluorocarbon snoods. These allow your bait to flutter naturally in the current and “waft” through the surface layers, far away from the splash and shadow of your lead. Made from 22/100 (approx. 8lb) fluorocarbon, the hook lengths are nearly invisible and provide the stiffness needed to prevent tangles during the cast.

Extra-Long Surface Snoods: The 200cm (2 meter) hook lengths are designed to maximize the “swimming” action of your bait, covering a massive area of the water column.
100% Fluorocarbon Construction: The 0.22mm snoods offer ultimate stealth for clear-water surface feeders like Mullet and Garfish, while providing enough “kick” to stay tangle-free.
Long-Range Main Body: A 180cm total rig length, built on a 0.45mm (approx. 30lb) main line, ensures the rig can handle the torque of a distance cast while keeping the hooks well-spaced.
Precision Hook Pattern: Fitted with Size 6 hooks, the perfect compromise for the small mouths of Mullet or the narrow, bony beaks of Garfish.
Surface Displacement: Designed to be used with a “free lead” (sliding lead) or a light sinker to allow the rig to rise and fall naturally with the swell.

Where to Use: Recommended Scenarios

The Special Surface rig is a tactical choice for specific summer conditions:

Garfish & Mackerel “Sprints”: When you see birds diving or fish breaking the surface, this rig is the most effective way to present a bait where the fish are actually feeding.
Clear Water Mullet: In calm, clear conditions where Mullet are patrolling harbor walls or piers, the 200cm fluorocarbon snoods provide the invisible presentation required to fool these notoriously shy fish.
Night-Time Horse Mackerel: When Horse Mackerel (Scad) move inshore at dusk, they often feed higher up. Using this rig with a tiny sliver of reflective mackerel skin is a deadly tactic.

Gerry’s Pro Tip

To get the best out of this rig, use a Mackerel “Fleurette”—this is a very thin, tapered sliver of mackerel skin and flesh (about 1–2 inches long). Hook it once through the tip so it “swims” in the tide. Because the snoods are so long, we recommend a smooth “overhead” or “off-the-ground” cast rather than a violent power cast to ensure the 2-meter leaders don’t wrap around the main line. If the fish are sitting very high, you can even add a small Sunset Pop-Up foam float just behind the hook to keep the bait literally on the surface
