Korda Kamakura Krank Hooks – Size 4 – Barbless

At Gerry’s Fishing, we often say that your hook is the most critical link between you and the fish of a lifetime. The Korda Kamakura Krank takes that philosophy to the extreme. The Krank pattern, designed by Tom Dove, was already a revolution in hook mechanics, but the Kamakura sharpening process elevates it to a level of “sticky-sharpness” previously only achievable by those who spent years mastering a sharpening stone.

The Kamakura Krank is sharpened post-production to a microscopic tolerance. This means that unlike standard hooks where the coating can slightly dull the point, these are honed after they are made, then protected with a specialized wax cap. In Size 4 Barbless, this is a formidable hook for large, hard-fighting carp on venues where barbed hooks are prohibited.

Key Features & Performance

  • The Krank Blueprint: Featuring a very wide gape, a curved shank, and a slightly offset point, the Krank is designed to “turn and stay” without the need for shrink tube or kickers. It is one of the most effective hook-holding patterns ever made.

  • Kamakura Precision: Every hook point is identical and ultra-fine. This consistency ensures that you aren’t just “hoping” your hook is sharp—you know it is the sharpest it can possibly be the moment it leaves the packet.

  • Wax-Capped Protection: To protect the delicate, needle-like point, each hook is dipped in a red wax. This prevents the point from being blunted during transit or while sitting in your tackle box.

  • Barbless Safety: Specifically designed for fisheries with strict barbless-only rules. The aggressive shape of the Krank ensures that even without a barb, the hook-hold is deep and secure, significantly reducing the risk of hook pulls.

  • Non-Glare Finish: The PTFE coating ensures the hook doesn’t flash or glint in clear water, keeping your rig as discreet as possible.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Simple Knotless Knot Rigs: The Krank’s unique shape means it doesn’t need fancy kickers or tubing. Just a simple knotless knot with a supple braid or fluorocarbon like IQ2 will result in an incredibly effective, fast-turning rig.

  • The KD Rig: The wide gape of the Size 4 Krank makes it the perfect choice for the KD rig. It provides a massive amount of “bite” for the hook to take hold, especially when using balanced wafters or buoyant baits.

  • Mueller Rigs: For fishing over clean gravel or silt, the Krank pattern on a coated braid provides a “resetting” rig that is nearly impossible for a fish to eject once that Kamakura point finds a hold.

  • Surface Fishing: While large, the Size 4 Barbless Krank is surprisingly effective for surface fishing when targeting very large carp. The offset point ensures a solid hook-hold even when the fish “slurps” the bait from the surface.

Gerry’s Pro Tip

Handle with Care:

These hooks are genuinely “sticky-sharp.” When you are threading your bait or tying your knot, be incredibly careful not to let the point touch your fingernails or the metal of your rig tool, as it can be dulled very easily. Only flick the red wax cap off once the rig is completely finished and you are ready to cast. If you are fishing over gravel, we recommend checking the point after every retrieve—a point this fine can occasionally “roll” if it’s dragged across stones, and at this level of performance, you only want to be fishing with 100% perfection!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the Krank over a Wide Gape pattern?

The Krank is an “all-in-one” solution. Its curved shank and offset point do the work of a kicker and shrink tube combined. It’s designed to be the ultimate hook for simple, high-performance rigs.

Does being barbless make me lose more fish?

Not with the Krank pattern. The deep, wide gape and the way the eye is angled mean the hook-hold is usually very secure. As long as you keep constant tension during the fight, the Krank is one of the most reliable barbless hooks on the market.

Can I use these with stiff materials like Mouthtrap?

While you can, the Krank is generally better suited to supple or semi-stiff materials. For ultra-stiff “Chod” style rigs, the Korda Kamakura Choddy is usually the preferred pattern due to its outturned eye.

How do I get the wax off?

Simply use your thumbnail to gently flick it away. It’s very soft and won’t damage the point, but it ensures that the “needle” end of the hook is factory-fresh when it enters the water.
