“The 8000 is a big reel built for big tasks. Because you’ll likely be using this for long-distance casting with 5oz or 6oz leads, I cannot stress enough the importance of using a Shock Leader. Pair this with an Axia 60lb-80lb Shock Leader to take the ‘snap’ of the cast. Also, when fishing at range, remember to set your drag just below the breaking point of the 20lb line; the Sphinx’s multi-disc system is very smooth, so let the reel do the work during a heavy run!”

Yes. The 8000 is a dedicated heavy-duty reel. It is best paired with 12ft to 14ft beach casting rods or heavy specimen carp rods. For a spinning rod, we’d recommend the Sphinx 4000 or 5000 models.

How much extra line does the 8000 hold?

While it comes pre-loaded, the 8000 spool is significantly deeper and wider than the 7000. This provides a massive ‘buffer’ of line, meaning even after a few cut-offs or tangles, you’ll still have plenty of line left to reach the horizon.
