Product Details and Uses

Guru Reaper Pole Section Retainer

At Gerry’s Fishing, we’ve seen it happen more times than we’d like to count: an angler is playing a match-winning carp, unships their pole, and watches in horror as their expensive carbon sections slide forward off the seatbox and into the lake. Standard “socks” do a job, but they often lack the versatility to handle multiple sections during a frantic bagging session. The Guru Reaper Pole Section Retainer is the professional’s insurance policy, combining three different retaining methods into one rock-solid unit.

What makes the Reaper stand out is its “2+1” design. By integrating two high-capacity mesh socks with a central Tulip-style flexing grip, you effectively have a retainer that can hold three separate sections of your pole at once. It’s built with the same “indestructible” mindset as the rest of the Reaper range, featuring heavy-duty EVA padding to ensure that even if you’re unshipping at speed, your pole sections are cushioned against any hard edges.

Key Features & Advantages

  • Triple-Section Efficiency: The clever layout allows you to store your “big” sections in the outer socks while keeping your immediate “shipper” section locked into the central Tulip grip. This eliminates the clutter on your side tray and keeps your pole perfectly organized.

  • “No-Look” Location: When you’re playing a fish, you shouldn’t have to look behind you to find your pole sock. These socks are designed with a wide, flared opening and a specific depth that makes locating your pole section effortless, allowing you to keep 100% of your focus on the landing net.

  • Total Carbon Protection: Guru has left no stone unturned regarding safety. The entire frame is wrapped in a thick, soft EVA foam. This prevents the “clatter” of carbon on plastic and ensures that even in high winds, your sections won’t get scratched or chipped.

  • Snag-Free Mesh: The socks are constructed from a premium, thick-grade mesh. Unlike cheaper alternatives, this mesh is designed to be snag-resistant, so your pole sections won’t get “stuck” when you need to ship back out in a hurry.

Pro Tip from the Shop

The “Wind-Lock” Strategy: On particularly gusty days, we recommend using the central Tulip grip for your most vulnerable section. While the socks are great for speed, the Tulip grip provides a “mechanical squeeze” that prevents the wind from lifting the pole section out of the retainer. Position the retainer so it’s roughly at a 45-degree angle to your seatbox; this creates a “lead-in” line that makes unshipping at 14.5m or 16m much smoother.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Long Pole Work (13m – 16m): When you have multiple sections shipping back behind you, the Reaper allows you to keep them separated and safe. No more sections knocking against each other and causing micro-fractures in the carbon.

  • Marginal Bagging: When you’re catching fish at an incredible rate in the edges, you need somewhere to “dump” your pole sections instantly. The wide socks are the perfect targets for high-speed unshipping.

  • Steep Bank Venues: If you are fishing a venue with a steep bank behind you, the deep socks ensure your pole sections won’t slide backwards or forwards, even if the retainer is mounted at an angle.

  • High-Wind Commercials: Use the central Tulip grip to lock your pole down while you’re re-baiting or unhooking a fish, providing peace of mind that your gear won’t end up in the water.

Internal Link Hooks

To build the ultimate pole management system, pair the Reaper Retainer with:

  • Guru Aventus Pole Range: The ultimate carbon deserves the ultimate protection.

  • Guru Reaper Rear Rests: For a secondary point of contact on your seatbox.

  • Guru Fusion Rod Holdalls: Keep your retainer and pole sections safe during transport.

FAQs

Will this fit my seatbox arm?

Yes. The Reaper Retainer features a standard 3/8 BSF brass thread, making it compatible with almost every bankstick, off-box arm, and tripod on the market.

Can it hold a 16m section?

Absolutely. The socks are oversized to accommodate even the largest diameter butt sections of modern 16m poles. It will securely hold anything from a single No. 4 section up to the full “handle” sections.

Is the Tulip grip too tight for thin sections?

The Tulip grip is made from a high-quality flexible rubber. It is designed to “flex” to the diameter of the section you push into it, meaning it provides a firm grip on a No. 4 section but will still comfortably accept a much thicker No. 6 or 7.

Does it come with the arm/bracket?

No, this is the retainer head only. You will need a standard bankstick or a seatbox accessory arm to mount it to your setup.
