When you are targeting the absolute titans of the ocean—fish that break tackle and spirits—you need a lure that can throw a “Haymaker” back. At Gerry’s Fishing, we recommend the Halco Roosta Popper 195 for the most demanding tropical and bluewater expeditions. This isn’t just a popper; it is a reinforced, high-impact tool built to survive the bone-crushing jaws of Giant Trevally (GT) and the blistering runs of Dogtooth Tuna.
The “Haymaker” edition is purposefully over-engineered. From the custom-made 7xx split rings to the 5/0 Mustad extra-strong trebles, every component is designed to ensure that when the fish of a lifetime hits, your gear is the last thing you have to worry about.
Standard lures often fail at the connection points. The Haymaker is fitted with custom 7xx heavy-duty fish rings and Mustad 5X extra-strong 5/0 trebles. This setup is designed to withstand the immense pressure of “locked-drag” fishing often required to stop a big GT before it reaches the reef.
At 110g with a huge cup face, the Roosta 195 creates a massive acoustic signature. It “bloops” with a deep, resonant thud that can be heard by predators from great depths. It is designed to call up the big players from the reef edge and trigger a territorial strike.
While it is the king of “blooping,” the Roosta 195 is surprisingly stable. It can be simply wound in at high speed to create a “skittering” action or even trolled behind a boat. Its aerodynamic shape allows it to be cast huge distances, even on the heavy 80lb–100lb braid typically used for this style of fishing.

Tropical Reef Edges: The ultimate choice for “popping” the reef drop-offs in the Maldives, Oman, or the Great Barrier Reef for Giant Trevally.
Offshore FADs: Excellent for drawing large Yellowfin or Bluefin Tuna to the surface.
Deep Water Ledges: Use the massive “bloop” to call predators out from deep-water structures and submerged pinnacles.
High-Speed Trolling: Can be used as a surface-running trolling lure for Wahoo and Sailfish when moved at 6–10 knots.
Gerry’s Pro Tip:
To get the perfect “Haymaker” bloop, use the Downward Sweep technique. Point your rod tip directly at the lure and wind in any slack. Then, firmly sweep the rod tip downward at approximately a 45-degree angle. This forces the cup face to trap air and “bloop” deep into the water column. Allow the lure to rest for 2–4 seconds after the sweep—the strike almost always happens when the lure is sitting still in the bubble trail.
What rod rating do I need for this lure?
At 110g, you need a dedicated heavy-popping rod. We recommend a rod with a casting weight of up to 150g or 200g (typically PE 6-10) to ensure you can load the blank properly for a long cast and have the backbone to work the lure effectively.
Can I use this for Bluefin Tuna in the UK?
Absolutely. As Bluefin populations increase around the UK coast, the Roosta 195 is becoming a favorite for offshore anglers. Its ability to be cast into feeding “bust-ups” from a distance makes it a lethal tool for our local giants.
Should I change the hooks to singles?
Many GT anglers prefer “Barbless Singles” for easier release and safety. While the stock Mustad 5/0 trebles are incredibly strong, the lure will still swim perfectly if you switch to 9/0 or 10/0 single hooks. Just ensure the weight remains balanced to keep that signature bloop.
Built for the fight, the Halco Roosta Popper 195 Haymaker is the only choice when failure is not an option.
