The Great Reel Debate: Multiplier or Fixed Spool?

It used to be simple. If you wanted distance, you bought a multiplier. If you were a beginner, you bought a fixed spool.

In 2026, that rulebook has been torn up. Modern “Long Cast” fixed spool reels now rival multipliers for distance, and they are much easier to use in the dark with cold hands. However, for pure winching power over kelp and rock, the multiplier is still king.

To help you decide, we’ve broken down the best reels on the market right now. These are the tools we use ourselves on the Lancashire coast.

1. The Rough Ground Beast: Penn Fathom II 15 SD Mag

Best For: Heavy Rough Ground & Mixed Beaches

If you fish marks where losing tackle is guaranteed, you need a reel that acts like a winch. The Fathom II is the modern successor to the legendary Penn 525, and it has quickly become the “standard issue” reel for UK shore anglers.

  • Type: Multiplier (Star Drag)

  • Capacity: 280yds / 15lb (Mono)

  • Braking: Knobby Mag Brake (adjustable mid-cast)

  • Gear Ratio: 6.1:1

Gerry’s Verdict:

“This is the Land Rover Defender of fishing reels. It’s not the prettiest, but it is virtually indestructible. The ‘Knobby Mag’ on the side is a game-changer—it lets you back off the braking mid-flight to squeeze out extra yards, or tighten it up when casting into a headwind to stop birdsnests. If you fish the Mersey, the Bristol Channel, or heavy kelp marks, this is the only reel you need.”

2. The Distance King: Shimano Ultegra 14000 XSE

Best For: Clean Beaches & Maximum Range

Shimano has completely dominated the fixed-spool market with the Ultegra series. The new XTE model brings “Super Slow Oscillation” (perfect line lay) to a price point that is actually affordable.

  • Type: Fixed Spool (Long Cast)

  • Weight: 600g

  • Tech: Hagane Gear & Infinity Drive

  • Line Lay: Super Slow 5 Oscillation

Gerry’s Verdict:

“Ten years ago, you couldn’t get a fixed spool to cast as far as a multiplier. The Ultegra XTE changes that. Because the line lay is so perfect (the spool moves up and down very slowly), the line flies off the spool with almost zero friction. We love the ‘Instant Drag’ cap too—half a turn takes you from locked up for casting to loose for a running fish. It’s a joy to use on clean sand.”

3. The “Bulletproof” All-Rounder: Penn Spinfisher VII Long Cast

Best For: Anglers who hate maintenance

Saltwater destroys gear. If you are the type of angler who throws their gear in the boot without rinsing it off (we’ve all been there), the Spinfisher VII is for you. It features IPX5 sealing, meaning it can take a serious splashing without seizing up.

  • Type: Fixed Spool (Shielded)

  • Sealing: IPX5 Rated (Water resistant body & spool)

  • Drag: HT-100 Carbon Fibre

  • Gearing: CNC Gear Technology

Gerry’s Verdict:

“The problem with many ‘long cast’ reels is that they are delicate. One grain of sand and they grind. The Spinfisher VII is different. It’s built like a tank. It’s slightly heavier than the Shimano, but it feels more robust. If you want the ease of a fixed spool but fish in rough weather or wading deep in the surf, this sealed body will save you a fortune in servicing costs.”

4. The Smart Value Choice: Penn Rival Longcast

Best For: Budget-conscious anglers & Spare Rods

You don’t need to spend £150+ to catch fish. The Penn Rival takes many of the features from the top-end reels and puts them in a graphite body to save cost.

  • Type: Fixed Spool

  • Body: Lightweight Graphite

  • Handle: Folding aluminium

  • Spool: Shallow (perfect for braid or light mono)

Gerry’s Verdict:

“We sell loads of these to anglers setting up a second rod. It casts 90% as well as the top-end reels but costs half the price. The ‘Gold’ version looks fantastic, but it’s the drag system that impresses us—it’s smooth enough to handle a running smoothhound without jerking. A brilliant entry-level reel that won’t let you down.”
