Stop Overcomplicating Your Rigs

Walk into any tackle shop and you’ll see walls of ready-made rigs: Loop rigs, Up-and-Overs, Bombers, Wishbones… it’s enough to make your head spin.

The truth? You only need three.

95% of fish caught on the UK shore are caught on one of these three setups. Master these, and you can catch anything from a dab in the harbour to a cod in a winter gale.

1. The Rough Ground Hero: The Pulley Rig

Target Species: Cod, Rays, Smoothhound, Bass. Best Ground: Rocks, Kelp, and Mixed Ground.

Why it works (The Physics): The Pulley Rig is designed to save your tackle. When a fish picks up your bait and you strike, the weight of the fish pulls the line through the “Pulley Bead.”

  • The Magic: This action slides your lead weight up the line, away from the seabed.

  • The Result: You fight the fish, not the lead dragging through the kelp.

Gerry’s Verdict:

“If I could only use one rig for the rest of my life, this would be it. It casts a long way (because the bait clips behind the lead) and it lands big fish. Pro Tip: If you are targeting big rays or cod, use a Pennell Setup (two hooks). Put the top hook through the top of the squid/worm and the bottom hook through the bottom. It stops the bait sliding down and doubles your hook-up ratio.”

2. The Scratching Hero: The 3-Hook Flapper

Target Species: Whiting, Dabs, Plaice, Flounder. Best Ground: Clean Sand, Mud, Harbours, Piers.

Why it works: This is about scent and movement.

  • Scent: Three baits puts 3x the smell into the water.

  • Movement: The short snoods (hook lengths) “flap” around in the tide, triggering the predatory instinct of flatfish.

Gerry’s Verdict:

“This is your ‘blank saver.’ If the big cod aren’t feeding, switch to a flapper with size 2 or size 4 hooks and ragworm. You’ll catch whiting, dabs, and pout all day long. The Secret: Watch your rod tip. If you see a rattle, wait. Flatfish often compete for the bait. Leaving it another 30 seconds often results in a double or triple hook-up.”

Essential Components:

  • Hooks: Kamasan B940 Aberdeen (Fine wire helps avoid damaging delicate worms).

  • Bling: Add Beads or Sequins. Plaice are incredibly curious and will follow a glittering sequin right to the hook.

3. The Distance Hero: The Clipped-Down Loop Rig

Target Species: Cod, Whiting, Plaice (at range). Best Ground: Clean Beaches (Surf Beaches).

Why it works: The “Flapper” is great, but it casts like a windsock. The baits fly everywhere, slowing the lead down. The Clipped Down Rig solves this. The hooks are clipped tight behind the lead during the cast, making the whole rig streamlined like a bullet. When it hits the water, the water pressure pushes the little plastic shield up, ejecting the hooks.

Gerry’s Verdict:

“Use this when the fish are past the 100-yard line. It’s the difference between fishing near the fish and fishing amongst them. Warning: You must use Bait Elastic. Because the cast is so fast, the force will strip the bait off your hooks if you don’t whip it on tight.”
