The Korda Kurv Shank is a modern classic that changed the way anglers think about hook mechanics. At Gerry’s Fishing, we consider this one of the most versatile and effective “anti-eject” patterns ever created. The genius of the design lies in its sweeping, curved shank, which creates a built-in “kicker” effect without the need for fiddly shrink tubing or rubber kickers.
When a carp sucks in a rig featuring a Kurv Shank, the weight of the hook and the angle of the eye cause it to flip and turn instantly. This ensures the ultra-sharp point is always driven into the tough bottom lip of the fish, resulting in a secure hook-hold that is incredibly difficult for the fish to shake off. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, the Kurv Shank provides a mechanical edge that puts more fish on the bank.
Automatic Flipping Action: The curved shank and in-turned eye work together to ensure the hook flips the moment the hooklink tightens, regardless of which direction the fish approaches the bait.
No Shrink Tube Required: Because the shape already provides the perfect aggressive angle, you can save time and keep your rigs streamlined by omitting additional tubing.
Massive Strength: Despite its elegant curve, the Kurv Shank is incredibly strong and reliable, making it suitable for everything from open-water fishing to targeting big fish in weedy or snaggy conditions.
Non-Glare PTFE Coating: The dull, silky finish ensures the hook blends in with the lake bed and remains discreet in clear water.
Ultra-Sharp Point: Each hook features a long-lasting, needle-sharp point that provides instant penetration.

The Blowback Rig: A firm favorite for bottom baits and wafters. The Kurv Shank’s curve provides the perfect path for a rig ring to slide, ensuring the bait is blown back and the hook is left clear to find a hold.
The KD Rig: By having the hair exit the knotless knot further down the shank, you create a “nose-heavy” bait. The Kurv Shank’s shape complements this perfectly, making it one of the most aggressive rigs in carp fishing.
The Multi Rig: A revolutionary alternative to using a Choddy hook. When incorporated into a Multi Rig, the Kurv Shank sits like a “claw,” with the point facing down and ready to grab the bottom lip the second it is sampled.
Wafter Presentations: Because the hook is designed to flip, it is ideal for balanced wafters. The hook sits flat on the bottom, hidden under the bait, but reacts instantly the moment it is moved.
The “Hair Alignment” Hack:
To get the absolute best out of the Kurv Shank, ensure your hair exits the knotless knot exactly where the curve starts to turn back towards the eye (usually opposite the point). This maximizes the “lever” effect. If you find the hook is turning too much, try sliding a small piece of 0.5mm silicone tubing onto the shank to trap the hair—this allows you to fine-tune exactly where the bait sits, ensuring the point always drops first!
Why would I use this instead of a Wide Gape?
While the Wide Gape is a fantastic all-rounder, the Kurv Shank offers more aggressive “turning” mechanics. If you find you are getting “picked up” without a run, or if the fish are being particularly cagey, the Kurv Shank’s ability to flip instantly can often turn those shy bites into solid hook-holds.
Is it strong enough for snag fishing?
Yes. The wire gauge on the Kurv Shank is surprisingly robust. While Korda also makes a “Kurv Shank X” for extreme conditions, the standard version is more than capable of handling large UK carp in and around weed and moderate snags.
Does the curve make it more likely to “gape open” under pressure?
Because of the way the eye is in-turned, the pressure is directed through the point and the bend rather than against the shank itself. This design minimizes the risk of the hook opening up, even during a heavy-handed fight.
Which size should I use for a 15mm boilie?
For a standard 15mm bottom bait or wafter, a Size 6 Kurv Shank is the perfect match. If you are scaling down to 10mm-12mm baits or particles, a Size 8 or 10 will provide a neater, more balanced presentation.
