More About Sea Line

At Gerrys Fishing we know your line is the link between you and the fish — get it right and everything else falls into place. Our Sea Line category covers sea fishing line, saltwater fishing line, braid, monofilament (mono) and fluorocarbon leaders, plus shock leaders and pre‑spooled options to suit surf, boat and rock marks.

Types and when to use them

There are three main line types every sea angler should understand: monofilament, braided line, and fluorocarbon. Mono is forgiving and good for general bottom and surf work; braid gives superior strength‑to‑diameter and casting distance for lure and long‑range casting; fluorocarbon is ideal as a leader because it’s nearly invisible and abrasion resistant.

Match line to method and ground

Choosing the right breaking strain and construction depends on your method and the seabed. For rock or snaggy marks you’ll want heavier, abrasion‑resistant line; for beachcasting lighter diameter braid or mono with a shock leader helps you cast further. Line strength choices vary by technique — many anglers use lighter mainline with a stronger shock leader for long casts, or step up to heavier mono when fishing over rough ground.

Braid, leaders and practical setups

If you’re lure or spinning fishing, braid as a mainline with a fluorocarbon leader gives sensitivity and stealth — braid for distance and feel, fluoro for abrasion resistance and invisibility at the business end. For general sea fishing, mono still has a place as a forgiving mainline and for shock absorption when using heavy leads. We stock a range of spool sizes and colours so you can match line to reel capacity and local conditions.

Care, brands and buying tips

Rinse all lines in fresh water after saltwater sessions and store spools dry to prolong life. Avoid cheap unbranded line — reputable manufacturers deliver consistent breaking strains and lower memory, which matters for casting and knot strength. Key buying tips: match line type to method; check spool capacity; use a shock leader for heavy casting; and replace line that shows abrasion or memory.

FAO

  • What line for surf casting? Use braid or low‑memory mono with a shock leader sized to your leads.
  • What leader for lure fishing? Fluorocarbon leaders 10–30lb depending on species and ground.
  • How often to replace line? Replace when you see abrasion, fraying, or excessive memory; rinse after every saltwater trip.
