Product Details and Uses

Garbolino Suppra Speed 428 – 4.5m (6 Sections)

When the match plan calls for high-cadence “line-to-hand” fishing, the Garbolino Suppra Speed 428 is the precision instrument you need in your armory. At 4.5 metres, this whip is engineered for the specialist who targets silverfish at speed. Whether you are snatching bleak from a river surface or swinging roach and perch on a canal, the Suppra Speed 428 offers the lightning-fast recovery and featherweight balance required to build a winning weight, fish by fish.

Constructed from high-modulus carbon, the 428 model is part of a legacy of Garbolino whips built for competitive excellence. Its six-section telescopic design ensures a seamless, fast action that translates every wrist flick into an instant hook set. The standout feature is the ultra-fine spliced-in solid carbon flick tip, which provides the perfect amount of cushion to prevent hook-pulls on small fish while remaining stiff enough to “swing” fish directly to your hand without the whip doubling over.

Key Features & Performance

  • Ultra-Lightweight Handling: Designed for one-handed operation over long durations, minimizing arm fatigue during high-volume sessions.

  • High-Modulus Carbon Blank: Offers a rapid recovery rate; the whip returns to its straight position instantly after a strike, ready for the next cast.

  • Finesse Flick Tip: The spliced-in solid carbon tip is incredibly sensitive, allowing you to use the lightest of rigs and smallest hooks (down to size 24) with total confidence.

  • Telescopic Convenience: No messing around with joints; simply pull the sections out and you are ready to fish in seconds.

  • Matt Grip Finish: The butt section features a specialized finish that ensures a secure grip even with wet hands or when covered in groundbait.

Where to Use the Suppra Speed 428

  • Canal Speed Sessions: The 4.5m length is perfect for reaching the “bottom of the far shelf” or the middle track on most UK canals, allowing you to intercept roach and perch at pace.

  • River Bleaking: When bleak are boiling on the surface of rivers like the Thames or the Wye, this whip allows you to cast, hook, and swing with a rhythm that traditional take-apart poles simply cannot match.

  • Drain and Fen Fishing: Ideal for silverfish on the drains where you need a bit more reach than a standard 3m whip but still want the speed of a telescopic system.

  • “Short-Line” Tactics: Excellent for fishing over the top of your groundbait in the margins of commercial fisheries when targeting small silverfish that have moved in to clear up the crumbs.

💡 Gerry’s Pro Tip

To maximize your speed with the Suppra Speed 428, set your rig length to be roughly 10–15cm shorter than the whip itself. This creates the perfect “arc” when you swing a fish; the fish will fly directly toward your chest or hand, rather than swinging wildly behind you. Also, keep a small towel on your knee to keep the handle clean—a clean whip is a fast whip!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Can this whip be elasticated?

A: The Suppra Speed 428 is designed specifically for “flick-tip” fishing (line attached directly to the tip). While you could cut it back to fit a light elastic, doing so would ruin the balanced action of the HM carbon. For elasticated work, we recommend a dedicated margin or power pole.

Q: How do I attach my rig to the flick tip?

A: We recommend using a small piece of silicone tubing or a dedicated “stonfo” style connector glued to the tip. Alternatively, a traditional “crow’s foot” knot using fly-line backing is a favorite among match pros.

Q: Is it strong enough to land a “bonus” fish?

A: While it is a finesse tool for silverfish, the high-modulus carbon is surprisingly strong. If you hook a 1lb+ skimmer or a small “stockie” carp, use the full length of the whip and your landing net—don’t try to swing anything over 6oz!

Q: Is it easy to transport?

A: Yes, at approximately 115cm when closed, it will fit into any standard rod holdall or even a large carryall, making it an easy “add-on” for your match day setup.
