At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that “Racing” isn’t just a label—it’s a performance standard. The Tenryu Furrary Racing 60lb is the high-performance thoroughbred of the tropical lure world. While some exotic rods feel like stiff, heavy clubs, the Racing series is designed for the angler who wants an “active” experience. It is a rod that prioritizes comfort and pleasure without sacrificing the raw, winching power needed to stop a hard-fighting predator.
Measuring 8’ 0” (2.44m) with a versatile casting weight of 40-130g, this rod is the ultimate tool for “schoolie” Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, as well as a host of tropical species. The secret to its incredible feel is the blank composition: 88% high-modulus carbon and 12% glass fibre. That 12% glass provides just enough “cushion” to make working lures for hours a pleasure rather than a chore, while the high carbon content ensures the rod remains “nervous” and responsive, allowing for pinpoint casting accuracy when fish are busting bait on the surface.
In the world of Tenryu, “small” tuna refers to fish in the 20kg to 50kg bracket—plenty big enough to test any angler’s mettle! The Furrary Racing is designed to be the “Goldilocks” rod: it has the tip speed to launch a 60g stickbait to the horizon and the progressive mid-section to absorb the violent, head-shaking runs of a Tuna or Roosterfish. It is remarkably light for a 60lb class rod, making it the perfect choice for anglers who prefer a more refined, technical approach to blue-water fishing.

Surface-Feeding Tuna: Whether it’s UK “schoolie” Bluefin or tropical Yellowfin, this rod is perfect for launching stickbaits into “boils” without the boat getting too close.
Central American Roosterfish: The 8ft length and 60lb backbone are ideal for casting large surface poppers and sliders from the beach or a panga.
Mediterranean Bluefish & Leerfish: A fantastic choice for heavy coastal work where you need to throw 80g+ lures into a headwind.
Light GT Work: Perfect for targeting Red Bass, Bluefin Trevally, and medium-sized GTs on reef edges where a 100lb rod would be over-gunned.
“The ‘Racing’ tag is all about speed and recovery. To get the best out of this blank, pair it with a high-speed 8000 or 10000 size reel (like a Shimano Saragosa or Stella). This allows you to keep up with a Tuna running toward the boat. My pro tip: because of the 12% glass content, the rod has a slightly more ‘forgiving’ strike than a pure carbon rod. When a fish hits, let the rod load up fully before you hammer the hook-set—that glass will protect your knots and ensure a much better hook-hold in a hard, bony jaw.”
What is the difference between the ‘Racing’ and the standard Furrary?
The Racing version is generally lighter and more ‘responsive.’ It is tuned for anglers who prioritize lure animation and casting distance over pure, vertical ‘lifting’ power. It’s the ‘sports car’ of the Furrary range—faster, more sensitive, and more fun to fish with.
Can it handle a 50kg Tuna?
Yes, but you’ll know you’re in a fight! It is designed for ‘pleasure’ fishing in the 60lb class. If you are consistently hooking 80kg+ monsters, you should look at the 80lb or 100lb Furrary models. This is a finesse-heavy tropical rod.
What is the ‘sweet spot’ for casting?
While it is rated 40-130g, we find it performs at its absolute peak with lures in the 60g to 100g bracket. A 90g sinking stickbait or a medium-sized popper will fly like a bullet on this rod.
How do I care for it after a tropical trip?
Always rinse the entire rod, especially the Fuji guides and the reel seat, in fresh water after every session. Salt buildup can occur quickly in tropical heat. A simple wipe-down will keep that 88% carbon blank and the “Racing” graphics looking showroom-fresh for years.
