When you’re out on the open ocean targeting fast-moving pelagics, you need a rod that combines agility with raw pulling power. At Gerry’s Fishing, we find the PENN Ally II 7’7″ (120g) to be the perfect “tactical” choice for boat anglers. By utilizing a 1+1 construction (where the main blade fits into a separate handle), PENN has created a rod that maintains the seamless action and structural integrity of a one-piece blank, giving you total confidence when a big Tuna decides to dive.
At 7 feet 7 inches (2.31m), this rod is slightly shorter and punchier than the popping models. This provides a massive mechanical advantage; the shorter lever allows you to apply maximum “dead-lift” pressure on a fish without the rod putting excessive strain on your back during a long vertical battle.
1+1 Blade-into-Butt Design: This construction ensures there are no “flat spots” in the blank’s curve. Because the joint is located in the handle, the high-modulus carbon blank can flex and recover naturally, distributing the immense pressure of a sounding fish evenly from tip to butt.
Fuji SiC Guides: When a Tuna or Amberjack makes a 40mph run, the heat generated can snap inferior lines. The Fuji SiC (Silicon Carbide) guides are diamond-hard, 100% saltwater-proof, and offer world-class heat dissipation to protect your heavy braid during the most intense phases of the fight.
120g Casting Versatility: Optimized for lures up to 120g, this rod is the ideal choice for medium-to-large stickbaits, heavy spoons, and casting jigs. The blank is exceptionally responsive, allowing you to “feel” the action of your lure and react instantly to subtle takes.
35-65lb Braid Rating: This rod sits in a versatile power bracket, making it ideal for the angler using 50lb or 60lb braid. It offers the sensitivity needed for Dorado and Bluefish but possesses the “shut-off” power required to stop Yellowfin Tuna and Trevally.
High-Density EVA & Fuji DPS Seat: Built for the ergonomics of offshore fishing, the high-density EVA grips remain secure even when wet, while the premium Fuji DPS reel seat ensures your reel stays locked in place under maximum drag.

Deep Water Reef Casting: Ideal for targeting Snapper, Grouper, and Amberjack over structure where you need to turn the fish’s head quickly before it reaches the reef.
Heavy Boat Spinning: A fantastic “cross-over” rod for the Mediterranean or Florida Keys, capable of handling everything from Bluefin Tuna to Tarpon.
Gerry’s Pro Tip
“The 1+1 design is the gold standard for boat rods because it gives you a much stronger blank than a traditional 2-piece. Pair this 7’7” model with a PENN Slammer IV 5500 or 6500 reel. To get the best out of the 120g rating, try using a slightly shorter drop when casting—this allows the mid-section to load more quickly, giving you a very accurate, punchy cast that is perfect for hitting ‘boils’ that appear suddenly near the boat
