Product Details and Uses

Shimano Catana GX Spinning Tele 2.70m 10-30g

Don’t let a lack of space stand between you and a trophy fish. At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that the best fishing spots are often the ones you find by accident—a quiet canal stretch on the commute or a rising trout while you’re out for a hike. The Shimano Catana GX Spinning Telescopic is designed for the angler on the move, offering the ultimate in portability without the “floppy” feel usually associated with travel rods.

Built on a Full Carbon blank, the Catana GX features Shimano’s signature Diaflash reinforcement. This cross-wrapped carbon tape in the butt section is a game-changer for telescopic designs; it minimizes blank twist under pressure, giving you a rod that casts accurately and has the “grunt” to pull a decent fish away from snags. With its 10-30g casting weight, this 2.70m model is the perfect “all-rounder,” handling everything from light spinners for perch to medium-sized lures for pike or bass.

Fitted with premium Fuji Stainless Steel K-Type guides and a classic cork handle, this rod looks as good as it performs. It’s a serious piece of kit that just happens to fit in your rucksack.

Where to Use

  • Urban “Street” Fishing: The 2.70m length is perfect for fishing over canal railings or around bridges. Its compact nature allows you to hop on a bus or train with your rod in a rucksack, making “after-work” sessions a breeze.

  • Backpacking & Hiking: If you’re heading into the hills for a weekend, this rod takes up zero room. It’s the ideal companion for targeting wild trout in remote mountain tarns or streams.

  • The “Just in Case” Car Rod: Because it collapses down so small, you can leave it in the boot year-round. You never know when you’ll spot a river that looks “fishy” while you’re out on the road.

  • Light Coastal Work: The 10-30g rating is fantastic for targeting mackerel, pollack, or school bass from harbor walls and piers. The Fuji guides are built to handle the salt and the friction of modern braids.

Pro Tip

Gerry’s Pro Tip: To keep your telescopic rod performing like a two-piece, always extend it from the tip section first. Gently pull each section into place until it’s snug—never “flick” the rod open, as this can jam the joints. When you’re done, wipe each section with a damp cloth before collapsing it. This prevents grit from getting trapped inside the blank, which is the number one cause of telescopic rods wearing out or snapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a telescopic rod strong enough for Pike?

Absolutely. While you wouldn’t use this for massive 100g jerkbaits, the 10-30g rating is perfect for standard pike spoons, spinners, and soft plastics. The Diaflash reinforcement ensures the rod doesn’t “fold” when a double-figure fish decides to lunge.

Can I use braided line with this rod?

Yes. Shimano has equipped the Catana GX with Fuji K-Type guides. These are high-quality, stainless steel guides designed to handle the heat and abrasion of modern braids, while the “tangle-free” frame helps prevent those annoying tip-wraps.

Does it come with a protective cap?

Yes, it is supplied with a sturdy plastic tip protector. We highly recommend using this whenever the rod is collapsed; the tip section of a telescopic rod is the most delicate part, and the cap ensures it stays safe in your rucksack.

What size reel matches this rod best?

For the 2.70m 10-30g model, a 2500 or 3000 size Shimano reel is the perfect partner. This setup will be balanced, lightweight, and offer enough line capacity for both freshwater and light saltwater scenarios.
