If you are looking to dip your toes into the world of boat angling without committing your life savings to a single piece of carbon, the Axia Pegasus Boat 8′ is an absolute gem. Here at Gerry’s Fishing, we often recommend the Pegasus to newcomers or “once-a-year” charter trippers because it strikes that elusive balance between “budget-friendly” and “genuinely capable.” It’s a rod that feels substantial in the hand and is forgiving enough to handle the learning curve of deep-water fishing.
The Pegasus is designed as a versatile “all-rounder.” Its standout feature is the sensitive glass tip. Unlike pure carbon rods which can be brittle if mistreated, the glass tip on the Pegasus is incredibly robust and provides a “softer” action. This is perfect for “scratching” over sandbanks for species like Plaice, Turbot, and Brill, where you need to see the tiny rattles of a flatfish before they commit to the bait. The 8ft length is a thoughtful touch; it gives you extra reach to keep your line clear of the boat’s hull or the person fishing next to you on a crowded charter deck.
The rod is built for comfort during long sessions. It features full EVA foam grips from the reel seat all the way to the rubber butt cap, providing a secure, non-slip hold even when your hands are covered in salt or bait. It is equipped with MN-style guides, which are the industry standard for durability, handling both monofilament and braided lines with ease. Because it breaks down into two equal sections, it’s a breeze to throw in the boot of a car or a standard rod bag.
Prime Locations & Uses:
Drifting Sandbanks: The 12-20lb class is the perfect weight for hunting flatfish like Plaice, Dabs, and Turbot.
Light Reef Work: Ideal for working lures or baits for Bass and Wrasse in shallower, clearer water.
Introductory Boat Fishing: A brilliant first rod for someone learning to manage a multiplier reel and boat tackle.
Inshore Species Hunting: Great for “fun” sessions targeting Bream, Gurnards, and small Whiting where a heavy rod would kill the sport.
“The Pegasus is what I call a ‘confidence’ rod. Because of that glass tip, it’s much harder to ‘snap’ than a high-end carbon rod if you accidentally high-stick it while bringing a fish aboard. My advice? Pair this with a decent entry-level multiplier and about 20lb–30lb braid. The glass tip will absorb the shock of the ‘no-stretch’ braid, making it much harder for fish to shake the hook out. It’s the perfect tool for enjoying a day on the water without worrying about your gear!”

Q: Is this rod strong enough for a 10lb Bass?
A: Yes! While it is a 12-20lb rod, the glass tip transitions into a solid mid-section. It might bend a bit more than a stiff carbon rod, but it has more than enough “grunt” to land a specimen bass or a decent-sized ray.
Q: Can I use a spinning (fixed-spool) reel with this?
A: No, this rod is designed for a multiplier reel. The guides are smaller and positioned on top of the blank to handle the way line leaves a multiplier. Using a spinning reel will likely result in the line rubbing against the blank and poor casting/dropping performance.
Q: Why choose the 8ft version over a shorter 7ft rod?
A: The 8ft length is great for “clearing the side.” On many charter boats, the gunwales (sides) are wide. The extra foot of rod length makes it much easier to guide a fish away from the boat’s hull or the propeller when they are right at the surface.
Q: How do I look after the glass tip?
A: Glass is tough, but it still needs a bit of love. After your trip, give the whole rod a rinse with fresh water to remove the salt. Pay attention to the guides to prevent “green” corrosion from building up, and the Pegasus will serve you for many seasons.?
