When you are stepping into the arena with true “drag-screamers”—giant Bluefin Tuna, Grander Marlin, or specimen Sharks—you don’t just need a rod; you need a structural insurance policy. Here at Gerry’s Fishing, we’ve seen plenty of gear fail under the absolute torque of big-game fishing, but the PENN Ally II 80-130lb is built for the “no-fail” zone. This is a dedicated heavy-tackle weapon designed to sit in the gunwale and win the battles that break lesser rods.
The Ally II is a masterclass in hybrid construction. It utilizes an incredibly tough tubular E-glass blank that transitions into a solid glass tip. Why? Because E-glass provides the “meat” and lifting power needed to move 200kg of angry muscle, while the solid tip offers the durability to withstand high-sticking and the extreme angles of a fish diving under the boat.
The Bent Butt design is the cornerstone of heavy-tackle offshore fishing. By angling the butt section, the rod stays lower in the rod holder or fighting chair, significantly increasing your mechanical leverage and reducing the physical strain on your back. It features a combination of Seaguide® Stainless Steel guides and PacBay® machined aluminum roller guides in high-stress areas. The rollers are vital for the 80-130lb class; they ensure that under massive tension, your line doesn’t melt or fray from friction, allowing for smooth, heat-dissipating performance during hour-long battles.
Prime Locations & Uses:
UK Bluefin Tuna: The definitive choice for the growing UK catch-and-release Tuna fishery where 100lb+ fish are the norm.
Big Game Offshore: Ideal for trolling for Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and large Wahoo in tropical waters.
Heavy Sharking: Perfectly suited for targeting Mako and large Porbeagle sharks in deep water.
Gunwale Fishing: Designed to live in a heavy-duty rod holder, allowing the boat’s hardware to take the initial shock of a strike.
“The 80-130lb rating isn’t a suggestion—it’s a promise. This is a heavy-tackle rod that belongs with a 50W or 80W size reel. Because it features a PacBay aluminum bent butt, it’s designed to stay in the holder during the strike. My advice? Check your roller guides before every trip. A tiny drop of high-quality oil on the PacBay rollers ensures they spin freely; if the rollers don’t roll, they’re just expensive friction points! This rod is for the angler who wants to stop fish, not just play them.”

Q: Can I use this rod stand-up, or is it only for a chair?
A: While the bent butt is optimized for rod holders and fighting chairs, many experienced heavy-tackle anglers use them for “stand-up” fishing with a specialized low-slung wide-profile gimbal belt. However, be prepared—the leverage it provides is immense, and it requires a proper harness setup to use safely.
Q: Is the 1-piece design difficult to transport?
A: The “1-piece” designation refers to the blank, but the PacBay aluminum butt is removable. This means the rod breaks down into two sections (the blank and the butt), making it much easier to fit into a rod tube for travel than a true 6ft single-piece rod.
Q: How do I maintain the roller guides in saltwater?
A: Salt is the enemy of moving parts. After every trip, rinse the guides thoroughly with fresh, lukewarm water to dissolve salt crystals. Periodically check that each roller spins freely by hand. If one is stuck, don’t force it—use a penetrating lubricant and then re-grease with a marine-grade oil.
Q: Why choose E-glass over Carbon for this rod?
A: Carbon is great for sensitivity and weight, but E-glass is king for durability and impact resistance. In 80-130lb fishing, the rod is subjected to violent shocks and extreme pressure. E-glass can take that punishment day after day without the risk of “shattering” that comes with high-modulus carbon.
