The PENN Conflict Egi Squid Rods are engineered for dedicated shore and boat anglers looking for a high-performance, responsive, and affordable tool specifically optimized for EGI (squid lure) tactics. Combining sleek Japanese blank aesthetics with rugged marine components, this specialized rod range is designed to deliver extreme casting distances and effortless lure manipulation while tracking cephalopods around coastal marks.
Built on a high-modulus 24T carbon core, the blank incorporates PENN’s advanced Carbon X-Wrap technology. This cross-directional carbon weave adds exceptional structural reinforcement, preventing blank twist during aggressive rod snaps and maximizing casting recovery. Outfitted with high-frame, tangle-free Kigan guides and a comfortable split EVA handle, the Conflict Egi provides the hyper-sensitive tactical feedback required to feel the subtle, soft weight of a squid touching your jig.
Blank Material: High-modulus 24T carbon blank with Japanese design profile
Blank Technology: Carbon X-Wrap reinforcement technology
Line Guides: Heavy-duty, tangle-free Hi-frame Kigan guides
Handle Configuration: High-density, saltwater-proof split EVA grips
Section Configuration: 2-piece equal split setup
Action: Fast, highly responsive tip recovery with a progressive mid-section
8ft 3in Model: Optimized for casting EGI jig sizes 2.0 to 3.5
8ft 9in Model: Optimized for casting EGI jig sizes 2.5 to 4.0
Coastal Pier and Harbor Wall Jigging: The ultimate tool for working vertical walls, structural pilings, and breakwaters where squid shelter under artificial lights.
Shallow Kelp and Reef Formations: Ideal for launching jigs far out over heavy kelp beds and shallow reef structures where large cuttlefish and squid actively hunt.
Estuary and Tidal Flow Marks: Perfectly balanced for working jigs through slow-moving, clean estuary currents and tidal channels.
Pro Tip
When working an EGI jig for squid, the bite almost always happens on the drop. After executing 3 or 4 aggressive, vertical upward rod snaps to make the jig dart like a panicked prawn, lower your rod tip slowly to track the jig as it falls back down. Because the Conflict Egi features Carbon X-Wrap technology, the blank transmits vibrations beautifully. Keep your index finger resting lightly on the exposed blank above the grip; if a squid opens its tentacles and grabs the jig on the drop, you won’t feel a hard hit, but rather a sudden, sponge-like weight or a faint tightening of the line. Strike with a firm, smooth sweep to pin the barbless crowns safely without tearing their soft tissue.
EGI sizes refer to traditional Japanese squid jig measurements rather than standard casting weights in grams. As a general benchmark, an EGI 2.0 jig weighs roughly 6g to 8g, an EGI 3.0 weighs around 14g to 16g, and an EGI 4.0 can tip the scales at 25g+. Choosing the 8ft 3in model gives you exceptional finesse for smaller summer jigs, while the longer 8ft 9in model provides the extra steel needed to punch out massive EGI 4.0 winter jigs into heavy head currents.
Standard bass or spinning rods are generally built with stiff tip sections optimized for driving thick treble hooks into bony jaws. If you use a rod that is too rigid for squid, the sharp snaps will cause the jig to move erratically, and you will frequently tear the squid’s delicate tentacles when you strike. The Conflict Egi features a highly specialized fast tip for casting, paired with a soft, progressive mid-section that yields smoothly under pressure, keeping the fine barbless crowns pinned safely throughout the fight.
Yes, absolutely. The Hi-frame Kigan guides feature premium marine-grade frames paired with ultra-smooth ceramic inserts. They are explicitly designed to withstand the harsh, corrosive effects of constant saltwater spray while minimizing line friction. The specialized high-frame, anti-tangle layout ensures that limp, low-diameter PE braids pass cleanly through the guides without wrapping around the frames during high-impact casts.
