Description

Sakuma 455 Octopus Hooks: 10 per pack

The Sakuma 455 Octopus is a cornerstone hook pattern in the terminal tackle box of the serious UK sea angler, prized for its extreme strength, wide gape, and versatility, making it the ideal choice for targeting large, hard-fighting specimen fish from both shore and boat.1

Core Design & Construction

  • Extra Strong Hi-Carbon Steel: Manufactured from heavy gauge, high-grade carbon steel, the 455 is built with exceptional structural integrity, giving anglers confidence when tackling powerful species or fishing rough ground.2

  • Finish: Finished in a smooth Black Nickel coating, providing good corrosion resistance for saltwater use.3

  • Gape and Shank: Features a short shank and an aggressively wide gape.4 This combination is crucial for presenting large, bulky baits (like big crab, squid, or whole fish baits) while ensuring the hook point is exposed for a solid hook-up.

  • Forged Bend: The metal in the hook bend has been compressed (forged), significantly increasing the hook’s strength and resistance to opening up under extreme pressure.5

  • Point & Barb: Features a chemically sharpened, slightly curved-in (beaked) point with a neat barb.6 The beaked design provides excellent penetration and helps lock the hook into the fish’s jaw.

  • Offset: The hook features a slight offset (or “kirbed” bend), where the point is turned slightly out of alignment with the shank.7 This is a deliberate design feature intended to increase the hook-up ratio.

  • Turned Out Eye: The out-turned eye is the defining characteristic of an Octopus pattern.8 This makes it perfect for snelling to heavy mono or fluorocarbon leader material, or for use as the top hook on a Pennel rig.9

Primary UK Sea Fishing Applications

The 455 Octopus is a true multi-purpose hook, with its usage dictated by the size chosen:

Hook Size Range Typical Target Species (UK) Primary Rig Use
Smaller Sizes (Size 1 to 2/0) Specimen Smoothhound, Large Bass, Gilthead Bream, Cod (in lighter conditions). Single hook running or clipped-down rigs, or as the bottom hook on a Pennel rig for moderate baits.
Mid-Sizes (3/0 to 6/0) Winter Cod, Conger Eel (shore/small boat), Bull Huss (Greater Spotted Catshark), Tope (juvenile). Standard heavy beach ledgering rigs, large fish baits (squid, mackerel), or the top hook on a Pennel rig for beach casting.
Largest Sizes (8/0 to 10/0) Specimen Tope, Large Conger Eel (boat/pier), Skate (small), general shark species. Boat ledger rigs, heavy running rigs, and drifting baits. Designed to be snelled directly to heavy mono/wire leaders.

Specimen Angler’s Advantage (Pennel Rig)

The out-turned eye of the Sakuma 455 makes it arguably the best choice for the top hook of a traditional UK Pennel Rig.10 The eye sits perfectly flush with the bait-holding trace line when the hook is threaded, allowing the hook to sit straight and true against the bait. This alignment ensures maximum strength and a clean presentation for the Pennel’s trailing hook assembly.
