The Sakura Stingray Egi 3504 FD is a technical spinning reel purpose-built for the art of “Eging”—the specialized pursuit of squid and cuttlefish. Unlike standard spinning reels, the Stingray Egi is optimized for the constant jigging and sudden bursts of a hooked cephalopod. This 3504 model is the versatile “all-rounder” of the range, offering a larger spool and a stronger drag system (5kg) compared to the smaller 2500 size, making it ideal for targeting larger squid or using heavier jigs in deeper water.

The standout feature of this reel is that it comes ready to fish, pre-spooled with 100 meters of high-visibility pink 0.10mm Dyneema braid. This 4-strand line is specifically chosen for its thin diameter and high sensitivity, allowing you to feel the most tentative “touch” from a squid’s tentacles.

Shore-Based Eging (Squid & Cuttlefish): The 3504 size is the perfect partner for 8ft to 8ft 6in Eging rods. Its 75cm retrieval rate allows you to quickly pick up slack line after aggressive rod twitches, ensuring you stay in constant contact with your jig.
Boat Jigging for Large Squid: When fishing from a boat in deeper water or stronger currents, the 5kg drag and larger spool capacity give you the upper hand against bigger “inkers.” The pink braid is highly visible above the water, helping you track the angle of your line.
Light Saltwater Lure Fishing: While designed for Eging, this reel’s high-quality Mustad-standard components and infinite anti-reverse make it a capable light lure reel for Perch or schoolie Bass.
Night Fishing: Cephalopods are most active at night. The high-contrast pink braid is easier to see under a headlamp or pier light, helping you detect bites visually before you even feel them on the rod.

“The ‘FD’ (Front Drag) on this reel is surprisingly smooth for its price point, which is critical for squid fishing. If your drag is too jerky, the hooks will simply tear out of the squid’s soft tentacles. I recommend setting the drag lighter than you think—the infinite anti-reverse will handle the hookset, and the progressive drag will do the rest!
