Precision meets power with the Shimano Catana GX Spinning EVA. At Gerry’s Fishing, we view the 8ft (2.44m) configuration as the “tactical all-rounder” for the modern predator angler. This model features a modern EVA split-grip handle for a rugged, high-performance feel and a Fast action blank. Unlike the more forgiving moderate-fast models, this rod is designed for the angler who wants a “snappy” response, providing instant hook-setting power and the ability to work lures with aggressive, pinpoint precision.
The core of this rod is a Full Carbon blank reinforced with Diaflash technology in the butt section. This cross-wrapped carbon tape is a mechanical necessity that minimizes blank twist (torsion) under heavy load. The result is a rod that tracks perfectly during explosive casts and provides the “grunt” needed to turn a powerful pike or zander away from bankside snags. With a 14-35g casting weight, it sits in the “Medium-Heavy” bracket—ideal for the majority of standard UK predator lures.
Equipped with premium Fuji Stainless Steel K-Type guides, the Catana GX is fully optimized for braided lines, ensuring your casting stays smooth and your line management remains tangle-free, even when “snapping” lures in breezy conditions.

River Pike & Zander: The 14-35g rating is the perfect match for standard shads, spoons, and larger spinners. The Fast action is a massive advantage when fishing at distance or in deep water, where you need to take up slack and drive the hook home instantly.
Canal & Dockland “Street” Fishing: The 8ft length provides the reach to fish over towpath railings while the responsive blank allows you to “jig” lures vertically against dock walls with high sensitivity.
Reservoir & Large Stillwaters: Use the extra leverage of the 2.44m blank to achieve the casting distances required to reach fish holding on distant drop-offs. The Fast action helps you “rip” lures through weed beds to trigger reactive strikes.
Coastal Estuary Spinning: A fantastic tool for targeting bass and pollack. The EVA handle is incredibly durable and easy to clean, making it a practical choice for the salt, while the Fuji guides manage light-to-medium braids effortlessly.
Gerry’s Pro Tip: Fast-action rods like this one are built for “active” lure work. If you love “twitching” jerkbaits or using a “sink-and-draw” method with soft plastics, this rod will excel. Because the blank recovers so quickly, you have a much more direct connection to the lure. When you feel that tell-tale “thud” of a take, remember: you don’t need a massive sweep of the rod—a short, sharp snap of the wrist is all that’s required to set the hook thanks to that stiff, responsive tip.
Why choose EVA over the Cork version?
EVA is the “modern” choice—it’s lightweight, extremely durable, and stays very grippy even when covered in water or fish slime. It’s also much more resistant to the abrasive nature of saltwater, making it the preferred choice for many all-round anglers.
Can I use monofilament on this rod?
Yes, but to truly get the most out of the Fast action and the Fuji K-Type guides, we highly recommend a high-quality braided line. Braid has zero stretch, which complements the fast blank perfectly for long-range hook sets and improved lure feedback.
Is 35g enough for big Pike lures?
It is perfect for “standard” pike lures (e.g., size 4/5 spinners, 12cm shads, and most spoons). However, if you intend to throw massive 80g-100g jerkbaits or heavy “dead-bait” rigs, you should look at the heavier 42-84g model in the Catana range.
What size reel matches this rod best?
A 2500 or 3000 size Shimano reel provides the best balance. A 3000 size is our top recommendation for the 8ft 14-35g model, as it offers the right weight distribution for all-day casting and sufficient line capacity for open water.
