Product Details and Uses

Tenryu Injection SP 77 MH

At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that the “Red Rod” isn’t just a status symbol—it’s a precision instrument. The Tenryu Injection SP 77 MH is a unique beast within the range. While many anglers gravitate toward the 8’ 2” models for pure distance, the 7’ 7” is the “technical powerhouse” designed for the angler who demands surgical precision and raw, unadulterated feedback. If you find yourself frequently switching between boat and shore, or if you need a rod that can “bully” a fish out of a tidal rip without losing the ability to feel a leaf touching your lure, this is the rod for you.

The SP 77 MH embodies the “Injection” philosophy: a remarkably responsive, “nervous” blank that translates every sub-surface vibration directly to your palm. With a casting range of 10-45g, it handles everything from standard 12cm paddletails to heavier metal jigs and large surface plugs. It’s a rod that feels light and nimble in the hand but reveals a “hidden” reserve of power once the blank is fully compressed, allowing you to stop a specimen Bass in its tracks before it can reach the safety of the kelp.

Sensitivity Meets Power

While this rod is a fantastic all-rounder, it is a soft-bait specialist at heart. The 7’ 7” length provides a significant mechanical advantage when “working” a lure. It is long enough to offer great leverage for casting and “mending” your line over current, yet short enough to remain incredibly crisp for technical animations like “darting” or “bottom bouncing.” The sensitivity is so high that you won’t just feel the bite; you’ll feel the displacement of water as a predator shadows your lure.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Boat-Based Shadding: The 7’ 7” length is the “Goldilocks” length for boats—long enough to cast far away from the engine noise but short enough to easily land fish at the gunwale.

  • Heavy Estuary Rips: Perfect for “searching” through fast-moving water with 20g-30g jig heads where you need to maintain constant contact with the bottom.

  • Rock Hopping: Ideal for roving along rugged coastlines where you need a shorter, more maneuverable rod for “snap-casting” into tight gullies and between boulders.

  • Large Freshwater Predators: An exceptional tool for targeting big Zander and Pike on large reservoirs where lure control and hook-setting power are paramount.

Gerry’s Pro Tip

“The SP 77 MH is an absolute ‘feel’ machine. To truly unlock its potential, don’t over-gun it with a heavy reel. We recommend pairing it with a 3000-sized high-end reel and a very high-quality 1.0 or 1.2 PE braid. Because the blank is so sensitive, using a thinner braid reduces ‘line drag’ in the water, allowing you to feel the lure’s tail vibrating even on a slow, deep drift. My secret? Use this rod for ‘weightless’ or lightly weighted soft plastics in shallow water—the extra ‘grunt’ in the butt section makes for an incredibly satisfying hook-set!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this rod too short for beach fishing?

While it won’t out-cast the 9′ 6″ Silver Arrow, the SP 77 MH is a surprisingly good caster due to its fast recovery speed. It’s better suited for technical shore marks (rocks, piers, estuaries) than open, shallow surf beaches where maximum distance is the only goal.

How does the ‘Power Reserve’ feel?

It’s progressive. In the first few inches of the bend, the rod is sensitive and “playful.” As you apply more pressure, the rod stiffens up rapidly. By the time you get into the mid-section, you realize you’re holding a very powerful tool that can handle much larger fish than its light weight suggests.

Can I use it for hard lures?

Absolutely. While it’s marketed as a soft-bait rod, the 10-45g rating makes it perfect for standard 120mm-140mm minnows and surface sliders. The fast action makes “walking the dog” with surface lures almost effortless.

Why is Tenryu so much more expensive than other rods?

You are paying for Japanese craftsmanship and proprietary carbon technology. Tenryu blanks are built to last a lifetime and offer a level of “resonance” that mass-produced rods cannot replicate. When you buy a Tenryu from Gerry’s, you’re investing in a rod that comes with a Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects.
