Product Details and Uses

Tenryu Bull Dog 7.0 Evolution

At Gerry’s Fishing, we’ve seen the Bull Dog name become synonymous with rugged reliability in the European saltwater scene. The Tenryu Bull Dog 7.0 Evolution is the latest chapter in that legacy—a rod specifically engineered for the diverse demands of European anglers. If you need a “workhorse” that can transition from launching a 40g hard bait to vertically working a 150g jig over a deep-water wreck, the Bull Dog Evolution is the definitive general-purpose tool for your boat or kayak.

Measuring 2.13m (7’ 0”), this rod is all about total lure control. At this length, the rod feels like a natural extension of your arm, allowing you to impart precise, subtle movements to soft lures that longer rods simply cannot replicate. The “Evolution” tag refers to the refined blank technology, which offers a powerful and smooth casting action combined with a very progressive tip. This ensures that while you have the backbone to bully a double-figure Bass or Cod, the tip remains forgiving enough to prevent fatigue during those grueling eight-hour sessions.

The Hybrid Powerhouse

The Bull Dog 7.0 Evolution is a rare hybrid. It features a casting weight of 20-50g, making it perfect for standard coastal lures, yet its vertical rating of up to 150g makes it a formidable jigging rod. This versatility is achieved through a technical blank taper that is “nervous” enough for casting but has the structural integrity for deep-water resistance. It is designed to let you fish longer and harder without the wrist and forearm tiredness associated with stiffer, less balanced rods.

Examples of Where to Use

  • Vertical Shadding: The 2.13m length is perfect for “feeling” 5-inch to 7-inch paddletails onto the seabed in 60-100ft of water.

  • Wreck Jigging: Use the 150g vertical limit to work metal jigs for specimen Pollack and Coalfish over offshore structures.

  • Heavy Estuary Boat Fishing: Ideal for casting 30g-40g hard baits or heavy soft plastics into fast-moving tidal races.

  • Kayak Fishing: Its compact length and massive power reserve make it one of the best “high-end” kayak rods on the market, allowing you to handle big fish close to the craft without high-sticking.

Gerry’s Pro Tip

“The Bull Dog is a rod that rewards a ‘controlled’ technique. Because the tip is so progressive, you don’t need to be aggressive with your jigging strokes; the rod will do half the work for you on the ‘lift.’ My top advice: pair this with a 4000-size reel and an 8-strand braid around 1.2 to 1.5 PE. This setup balances the rod perfectly at the reel seat. If you’re fishing over wrecks, use that progressive tip to your advantage—when a big fish hits, the tip will ‘give’ just enough to let the fish turn, allowing you to set the hook into the corner of the mouth rather than pulling it out!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the vertical jig weight (150g) so much higher than the casting weight (50g)?

Casting puts a dynamic ‘snap’ stress on the blank, whereas vertical fishing is a static load. The Bull Dog Evolution is engineered to handle the resistance of a 150g jig in deep water without ‘folding,’ but for safety and maximum distance, we recommend staying under 50g when casting overhead.

Is this rod suitable for shore fishing?

At 7ft, it is primarily a boat, kayak, or pier rod. While it casts exceptionally well for its length, most shore anglers will prefer the extra reach of an 8ft or 9ft rod. However, if you are fishing from a pier or a steep-sided harbor wall, the Bull Dog is a superb tool.

What makes the ‘Evolution’ different from the original Bull Dog?

The Evolution features a more refined carbon layup that reduces the overall weight of the blank while increasing its ‘crush strength.’ It is more sensitive than the older models, allowing you to feel the seabed and subtle bites even when using heavier jigs.

Can it handle Cod and Pollack?

Absolutely. While often used for Bass, the Bull Dog Evolution has a massive amount of ‘grunt’ in the butt section. It is a favorite among European boat anglers for targeting double-figure Cod and Pollack on lures, as it offers the perfect mix of pleasure and power.
