At Gerry’s Fishing, we know that finding a rod that can handle the delicate “plucks” of a schoolie but still has the grunt to stop a “double” is the holy grail of lure angling. The Tenryu Injection SP 79 MH (A905) is precisely that—a scalpel with a sledgehammer’s heart. Often overshadowed by its longer 8’ 2” cousins, the 79 MH is a specialist tool that offers a slightly more compact, nimble feel without sacrificing the legendary “Red Rod” power.
What makes the A905 stand out in the Injection lineup is its refined balance. Measuring 2.40m (8’), it is the perfect length for the roving angler who finds themselves switching between steep rocky ledges, cramped estuary banks, and open beaches. The blank is a sophisticated blend of 93% high-modulus carbon and 7% glass fibre. That hint of glass is the “secret sauce”—it provides the mechanical resistance needed to handle high-torque fights while ensuring the rod remains “soulful” and progressive rather than brittle and stiff.
The defining characteristic of the SP 79 MH is its ultra-soft tip. This isn’t just for comfort; it serves a tactical purpose. The softness allows you to use much finer braided lines and fluorocarbon leaders than you’d normally risk on a Medium-Heavy rod. It cushions the strike, preventing the hooks from tearing out of a soft mouth, but as soon as the rod begins to load, the soft tip “gives way” to a massive reserve of power in the butt section. This allows you to dominate a large fish and steer it away from snags with total authority.

Soft Bait Shadding: This rod was practically born for straight-retrieve “shadding” with paddletails. The soft tip lets you feel the lure’s vibration perfectly, even in deep water or heavy current.
Estuary Roving: At 8ft, it’s short enough to handle underhanging trees and tight bankside vegetation, yet long enough to reach the middle of the channel.
Wading Flat Sands: Excellent for launching 20g-25g minnows or surface lures into the surf. The 47cm handle provides enough leverage for comfortable, double-handed casting all day.
Kayak or Small Boat Fishing: The slightly shorter length than the 8′ 2″ models makes it much easier to handle a fish at the side of a boat or kayak while still giving you the distance to prospect the shore.
“The 79 MH is a ‘feel’ rod. If you’re used to stiff, ‘poker-like’ rods, the soft tip might feel strange at first, but trust it. That softness is what keeps fish pinned. When you’re using fine lines—say a 0.8 or 1.0 PE—the tip acts as a shock absorber during that initial, violent first run. My advice? Pair this with a 3000-sized reel and don’t be afraid to fish it with light fluorocarbon leaders. The rod’s action is so progressive that you’ll get away with a lighter leader than you’d expect, which will get you more bites in clear water!”
How does the A905 compare to the SP 82 MH?
The A905 is slightly shorter and feels a touch more “precise” in tight spaces. While the 82 MH is the king of distance, the 79 MH is the king of maneuverability. If you do a lot of roving or fishing from a boat/kayak, the 79 MH is often the better choice.
Can it handle hard lures and topwaters?
Absolutely. While it’s marketed as a soft-bait specialist, that 8-35g rating makes it perfect for standard 12cm-14cm minnows and surface lures like the Patchinko 125. The soft tip actually helps “inhale” a surface lure, as the fish doesn’t feel the rod’s resistance as quickly.
Is the 7% glass content a negative?
Quite the opposite. In high-end Japanese rods, glass is used to increase the rod’s “mechanical resistance.” It makes the rod tougher and less likely to snap under sudden, weird angles during a fight. It also gives the rod its famous “springy” casting action.
Is 37cm a long handle for an 8ft rod?
It’s a generous length, designed to be tucked under your arm for stability during a retrieve and to provide leverage during a long-distance cast. It balances the rod perfectly, making it feel lighter in the hand than it actually is.
