At Gerry’s Fishing, we’ve seen the “Red Rod” revolution firsthand. For years, the original SP 82 MH was the benchmark, but its offset (1+1) handle design made it a bit of a headache for anglers who didn’t want a 6-foot rod tube taking up the entire car. Enter the Tenryu Injection SP 82 MH 2ES. This “2 Equal Strands” version is the answer to every shore angler’s prayer—it offers the exact same legendary performance, power, and “nervous” sensitivity of the original, but it breaks down into two equal pieces for effortless transport.
Measuring 2.50m (8’ 2”) with a versatile 12-45g casting rating, this rod is a masterclass in leverage. Whether you are stood on a windswept rocky point or navigating areas of large boulders and scree, the SP 82 MH gives you the reach to maneuver your lure around snags and the backbone to stop a “double-figure” Bass from diving into the kelp. Its unique composition—89% carbon and 11% fiberglass—provides a blend of mechanical resistance and raw power that pure carbon rods simply cannot match, making it as durable as it is deadly.
While this rod is an all-rounder, it truly “sings” when used with paddle tail soft baits. The Regular Fast action means the tip stays soft enough to feel the subtle “thump” of a lure’s tail and maintain constant contact during bottom-bouncing or straight retrieves. However, don’t let that soft tip fool you; when you lean into a cast, the mid-section loads up like a catapult, and when you hook a fish, the butt section provides an enormous reserve of power. It’s also surprisingly capable with large topwater lures, providing the recovery speed needed to work a slider across the surface with ease.

Rocky Points & Headlands: The 8′ 2″ length provides the leverage needed to fish over marginal snags and steer hard-fighting fish away from sharp rocks.
Exploratory Boat Fishing: An exceptional choice for “prospecting” from a boat, launching soft baits toward the shoreline to find where the fish are holding.
Heavy Surf Beaches: The 12-45g rating allows you to step up to heavier jig heads or metal lures when you need to punch through a headwind or reach a distant sandbar.
Estuaries & Tidal Rips: Use the soft tip to “feel” your way through the tide, maintaining perfect control over your lure’s action in fast-moving water.
“The 2ES version is a game-changer for the roving angler, but here’s a tip to keep it in top shape: because Tenryu uses a high-performance spigot joint, make sure you keep the joint clean and free of sand. A tiny bit of candle wax on the male part of the joint once or twice a season will keep the fit perfect. My favorite lure pairing for this rod? A 12cm to 15cm paddletail on a 15g to 25g head. The rod loads perfectly in this range, and the feedback through the blank is so clear it’s almost like having a camera underwater!”
Does the 2-equal-piece design change the action compared to the original?
Tenryu has spent a massive amount of time engineering the spigot joint for the 2ES. The result is a rod that has the exact same power curve and “feel” as the original 1+1 model. You get all the performance with none of the transport hassle.
Why is there fiberglass in the blank?
Many ultra-expensive rods are 100% carbon, which can make them brittle. Tenryu adds 11% high-quality fiberglass to increase “mechanical resistance.” This means the rod can handle high-torque situations and sudden lunges from big fish without the risk of the blank snapping under pressure.
What is the ‘sweet spot’ for casting?
While it is rated 12-45g, we find it really comes alive in the 18g to 35g bracket. It will handle a 40g metal jig comfortably, but for ultimate distance and accuracy, those middle-weight lures are where the blank performs its best.
Is it suitable for freshwater predators?
Absolutely. While it’s a legendary Bass rod, it’s also a fantastic tool for big Pike and Zander, especially when using larger soft plastics or heavy spoons on big rivers and reservoirs.
