Pro Tip 1: The “Sweet Spot” Spooling. Because the 5000 has a deep spool, we recommend using a 30lb braid. This gives you the perfect balance of strength and casting distance. Use the inner Line Capacity Ring as your guide—don’t overfill, or you’ll risk “wind knots” during a heavy cast.

Pro Tip 2: Drag Maintenance. After a particularly “fishy” session where the drag has been working hard, back the drag knob off completely before storing your reel. This prevents the HT-100 washers from becoming compressed, keeping your drag silky smooth for your next trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Pursuit V 5000 too big for bass lure fishing?

It is on the larger side for dedicated lure fishing. If you are casting 20g lures all day, the 3000 or 4000 sizes are lighter. However, if you are using heavy lures (40g+) or fishing in very rough ground where you need extra power, the 5000 is a great choice.

Can I use this reel for beach casting?

Yes! While not a “Long Cast” reel, the 5000 is excellent for light surf work or “bass-style” beach fishing. It pairs perfectly with an 11ft or 12ft Bass Rod or a 2–4oz specimen rod.

Does it come with a spare spool?

To keep the price as competitive as possible, the Penn Pursuit V series is supplied with one high-quality machined aluminum spool. Additional spools can be ordered separately if required.
